Sheryl J. Cavanagh

Sheryl decided to pursue study with CQUniversity to support her recovery after an injury, widen her skills and expand her employment opportunities. Living in a remote rural area, she was drawn to the flexibility of online study and chose CQU after attending an Open Day at the Cairns Campus.

She initially selected a Diploma of Arts and later continued her studies through a Bachelor of Arts, with majors in History, Geography and Environmental Studies, and Psychology. Her studies strengthened her research, theory, writing, time management and self-management skills, while also supporting her work as a Museum Project Officer and contributing to her confidence in producing detailed technical reports.

Sheryl’s current work involves census research, demographic data collation and manipulation, evaluation, critical thinking and written reporting. Her work also connects with community engagement, environmental stewardship and project-based research, including sourcing literature reviews and contributing to structured reports.

One of Sheryl’s career highlights was presenting her historical paper, Pioneering Chinese of Geraldton (Innisfail), Queensland, at the 2019 Chinese Studies Association of Australia conference at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

In 2018, Sheryl also contributed to Paronella Park’s oral history Gallery Collection by recording the attendees of the heritage attraction’s inaugural 1939 wedding reception. This project reflected her interest in preserving local history and making community stories accessible for future generations.

Alongside her professional and academic interests, Sheryl is passionate about environmental stewardship and community contribution. She volunteers as a Defence Approved Helper with the Australian Air Force Cadets and is also interested in pursuing a Research Higher Degree in the future.
