Upon leaving high school I enrolled in a different degree at a different university, however I quickly realised that was not for me. I made the swap into teaching at CQU and completed my full-time degree from there. CQU was the only university at the time that offered full time study online. They were flexible, understanding of life’s craziness, and also were highly spoken about in all schools where I attended placement.
Throughout my full time degree I worked full time at a childcare centre, every day I would see my reason for completing this degree. Supporting students to learn, explore their world and become confident in themselves was mind blowing. Throughout my degree I was reminded of why I loved my degree choice when I went on placement at various local schools and grades. Interacting with current teachers who were just as passionate about their career many years in as I was at the start of mine.
My degree provided me with the connections to my mentor teachers and schools that has supported me throughout my teaching journey so far. I have stayed connected throughout the years to my mentor teachers, who have continued to provide me with support beyond their placement with me. My degree allowed me to build my skills in collaboration, which is a huge part of my career. I engaged with research and literature which benefitted me when entering into a very knowledgeable school team upon graduating, allowing me to have confidence in my practice and pedagogical approaches inside my classroom.
I am entering my fourth year of teaching in 2025. When I started out I secured permanency at a fantastic school in a lower primary position. I took on a composite grade 1 and 2 class that year which moved into a whole school transition to composite classes to support our students’ needs. I completed another year leading the 1/2 cohort as a cohort leader, supporting my colleagues in navigating the composite curriculum inside the classroom.
In 2024 I made the leap back into prep where I have found my passion and favourite curriculum so far. I will continue as a prep teacher in 2025 welcoming our littlest learners into our school and exploring learning in big school with them throughout the year. My job focuses on delivering our curriculum in an engaging and student focused way while also making reasonable adjustments to support all students in achieving success in their learning, and building effective relationships to support students, family and community members to have a sense of belonging and safety at our school
Since graduating from CQU I have experienced some milestones both professionally and personally. Personally, I have gotten engaged, married, bought a house and adventured out of the country for holidays. Professionally I have had the opportunity to participate in professional development across multiple areas that has supported me in becoming a more knowledgeable teacher and learner.
