When mother of six, Shirley Reid, crossed the stage yesterday to receive her Certificate III in Education Support at the CQUniversity Rockhampton Graduation Ceremony, she took the first steps towards a new future.

Shirley was one of hundreds of students to graduate at Rockhampton on 4 December and she was especially proud to be included amongst the students receiving a vocational qualification.

Her husband and children – the oldest being 16 and the youngest just four months old, were also by her side for the celebration.

“I was an accountant, but I decided to study Education Support because, as a mother of six kids, it suited me better,” she said.

“It was very challenging studying the course – I was up in the middle of the night or most of the nights studying when everyone was asleep.”

All that studying paid off when Shirley took on full-time employment at her children’s school Berserker Street State School.

“I am a full-time teacher aide and I feel very lucky to have this job,” she said.

“I love working with kids – I’d still like to be an accountant or maybe pursue teaching further, but when my children are older.”
