The Brisbane Bullets prevailed 84-76 over the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans during the NBL Showdown hosted at the CQUni Rockhampton North Sports Stadium on Saturday evening.

Around 1500 watched the game live and more than 1000 others tuned in via live video stream, including audio commentary.

The battle of the Queensland NBL franchises was presented by CQUni in conjunction with Rockhampton Regional Council and Rockhampton Basketball.

It was the third year that Rockhampton has hosted the 'showdown' - previous years featured the CQUniversity Cairns Taipans v the Perth Wildcats and Townsville Crocs.

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman says the University is extremely proud of the Cairns Taipans partnership, which brings many opportunities for community engagement, including the NBL Showdown.

Manager of Rockhampton Basketball Inc, Matt Neason says the showdown is a great way to promote the sport and entice locals to become more involved.

“Increasing participation numbers is a number one priority for Rockhampton basketball and the Showdown is just another way of promoting how great the sport is. It’s also exciting for our best local players to watch them play on home ground and be given the opportunity to engage with the professionals while they are here,” Mr Neason says.

Rockhampton Region Deputy Mayor Councillor Cherie Rutherford said hosting the NBL Showdown for the third time was a real coup for the local sporting calendar and further bolsters the growth of the event.

“The NBL is a fantastic drawcard for our Region with the finest basketball players in our country playing right here in our home town for our local community,” Cr Rutherford said.

“With the collaboration between Council, CQUniversity and Rockhampton Basketball, it’s proof that we have the capability to host national sporting events of this calibre with the support of big crowds and national-standard facilities.”
