The CQUni Cairns Taipans have followed their showcase game against the Townsville Crocs in Rockhampton with a strong showing in the 2015 NBL Blitz.

The Taipans have finished runners up in the Blitz, narrowly missing out on the Loggins-Bruton Cup to Melbourne United.Cairns had its chance to claim the Cup on Saturday night, but took home five points from its overtime win over the New Zealand Breakers instead of the required six.

That left the undefeated Snakes on top of the ladder with 17.5 points on Saturday night, leaving Melbourne United needing a comprehensive victory over the Sydney Kings to claim their full seven points and the Cup.

United delivered just that on Sunday, running over the Sydney-siders from start to finish for a comprehensive 92-56 win, narrowly nabbing the pre-season honours with 17.5 points to the Taipans’ 17.

The Taipans now return to Cairns, where they open the 2015/16 NBL season at home versus the Illawarra Hawks on Thursday, October 8.
