10,000 Steps strides past 300,000th member milestone

Alison Moody was among the first 500 members of 10,000 Steps, joining soon after the world-leading program started from its headquarters of CQUniversity Rockhampton, back in 2001.
Since then, she has logged over 31 million steps and the program itself now reaches over 300,000 online members, collectively logging in excess of 150 billion steps.
As part of the Queensland Government’s Healthier. Happier. Workplaces program,10,000 Steps is continuing to step up as Queensland’s leading physical activity promotion project.
This milestone year has also seen the project secure an additional three years' funding commitment from the Queensland Government.
Project leader Dr Mitch Duncan says the milestones are a good sign for the future of the program.
“Reaching these sorts of milestones is evidence of not only the popularity of 10,000 Steps with the public but also the project’s ability to grow over time. What originally started as a Rockhampton-based project now attracts members from all over Queensland, Australia and internationally,” he said.
“10,000 Steps will continue to promote physical activity to individuals, workplaces and communities as we have done for over a decade.”
“We will be continuing our work with workplaces to increase the physical activity levels of their workers. For example, this month (July) we will be awarding over 8500 pedometers in grants to help Queensland workers become more active."
Based at CQUniversity in Rockhampton, 10,000 Steps is a not-for-profit program –- which promotes physical activity by encouraging members to use a step-counting pedometer to measure and then increase the number of steps taken throughout the day.
The program is supported by a free physical activity website, www.10000steps.org.au and free iPhone application ‘iSteplog’ where members can record their steps, track their progress and participate in individual and/or team challenges.
Workplaces and community groups can participate in 10,000 Steps Challenges which involve teams completing either timed or ‘virtual’ walking journeys. Some organisations like to add friendly competition, pitting department against department, or region against region for some extra fun and motivation.
