CQUni Knows Sonam
My name is Sonam Jalota and I am working towards a Bachelor of Echocardiography with CQUniversity.
I was born in Kenya and moved to Australia when I was seven years old. Working within the health sector has always been something I’ve wanted to do. I’ve always had a keen interest in the heart and diagnostic imaging. Having family members and friends who have suffered with heart problems over the years is a huge eye-opener, and I wanted to be able to understand what was happening to them from a medical point of view.
My uncle was ill and had to spend some time in the ICU. My grandad also had several health problems, including cancer. And my mum suffered with a brain tumour. One of my close friends has Ischaemic Heart Disease (which is decreased blood flow and oxygen to the heart muscle) that affects most people in his family. They are all used to having regular Electrocardiograms (ECGs), which is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heart to show whether or not it is working normally. This is a cause close to my heart and was something that made me want to study echocardiography.
I began studying Health Science after school, but I found it hard to make friends at a bigger university. I’ve always been extremely interested in anything related to medical imaging and health science, so when I eventually found out that CQUni offered a Bachelor degree in Echocardiography, I obviously wanted to learn more. I’ve found that education in Perth is really good and I feel very lucky to have this opportunity. At CQUni I know everyone in my classes and I know that I will have friends for life. The things I liked most about studying at CQUni are the flexibility and how friendly the staff are. Coming to CQUniversity has made me feel more confident about my studies.
I would love to work in a hospital or practice as a cardiac sonographer – I love the patient interaction. And hopefully someday, when I have enough experience, I would love to open up my own practice. I’d love to do that!
