Gain this qualification to have the skills and knowledge to be confident in a range of kitchen functions and activities. Work would be completed in different hospitality businesses like restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs and cafeterias where food is prepared and served. This course is included in the Australian and Queensland Government’s Fee Free TAFE program.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals working in kitchens who use a defined and limited range of food preparation and cookery skills to prepare food and menu items. They are involved in mainly routine and repetitive tasks and work under direct supervision. This qualification does not provide the skills required by commercial cooks, which are covered in SIT30816 Certificate III in Commercial Cookery. This qualification provides a pathway to work in kitchen operations in organisations such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops; and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons, and schools.

This is a nationally recognised accredited course.

This course is typically delivered over a two year period, however as it is competency and cluster-based, it may be possible for students to complete their training sooner if they have reached the required skill level. Practical skills must be demonstrated in an operational kitchen or simulated environment such as restaurants, hotels, catering operations, clubs, pubs, cafés, and coffee shops; and institutions such as aged care facilities, hospitals, prisons, and schools. Students not currently working in the industry, or who do not have access to workplace simulated environments will need to discuss this with the teaching team.

This course has no residential schools.

Completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

There are no other entry requirements for this course.
