Overview

CQUEnglish gives you the skills and confidence for everyday communication in English and academic study. We have highly qualified and dedicated teachers who can help you experience learning English in a supportive and caring environment. No matter what your English needs are, we can help you reach your goals.

CQUniversity provides English language courses for international students from non-English speaking backgrounds. Courses include EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and IELTS Preparation.

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes are intended for students who want to learn academic English. As well as continuing to develop your English skills, there is also a focus on skills needed for further study at CQUniversity. These include researching, planning and writing reports and academic essays, giving presentations and becoming more confident speaking to a group, and developing your critical thinking skills to examine a range of academic issues. Our EAP courses develop your understanding of academic integrity and how to collect, assess and present information for academic purposes including referencing. EAP courses are dynamic and interactive. Resources include academic texts, journals, lectures and videos, and you will participate in authentic academic activities related to your course. Assessments are based on those typically found in degree courses at CQUniversity.

IELTS Preparation will help you improve your English and prepare for your IELTS test. Classes are organised around the contents of a typical IELTS test and give you the opportunity to practise your test skills using IELTS test-style materials. IELTS Preparation is suitable for anyone preparing to sit the IELTS Test. The course covers all aspects of the IELTS test structure as well as skills and language development to increase your accuracy and fluency.

I am absolutely loving being a student. My first concern before I came to Melbourne was whether I could understand or not what the teacher says. But all the teachers and staff are very brilliant and helpful for every student, I feel 100% supported.

Career Opportunities

Seven hundred and fifty million people speak English as a second language and 1 in 4 speak some English. With English becoming the unofficial language of the world, those who can speak it are well on their way to being truly global citizens. The universality of English means its speakers have an edge over others when it comes to finding employment as they will speak the language which is used for global communication.

Strong literacy skills, as taught in EAP classes, enhance conversational English and improve employment opportunities. A higher level band score from an IELTS exam or a pass in EAP Direct Entry provide global verification of the holder's English abilities for potential employers.

The overseas experience provided by studying English in Australia is often valued by employers as it demonstrates that the person can cope with living and working in another country. In addition, it shows that the language has been learned from native speakers in a native speaking country and not artificially from a book in a home-country classroom.

A pass in EAP or IELTS should fulfil the English language requirement for entry into many CQUniversity degree courses - the first step on the way to a university degree.

The ability to collect, evaluate and report on information which is taught in IELTS and EAP classes is invaluable for coping in a western style university or school as well as enhancing workplace performance.
