Groupwork may have two distinct meanings:
a) 'Groupwork as assessment' refers to a form of assessment that typically includes assessment tasks assigned to groups of two or more students, and may involve various strategies for structuring group activity and assessing student learning outcomes and achievement as members of the group. This type of groupwork may be used in coursework components of undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications, but not as components of independent learning (study or research).
b) 'Groupwork as support' refers to a group context used purely as a means of supporting student learning in which students undertake independent learning (study or research), an assessment is based on the student's individual learning outcomes and achievement. The group context offers a social structure but does not involve assessment of student learning outcomes or achievement based on their participation in or contribution to the group.
