2018 Annual Report

CQUniversity's Annual Report describes the University's performance and achievements and management of resources, against the goals and objectives set out in our Strategic Plan.

As a leader in higher education, our approach to teaching and education aligns with the themes of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education.

INNOVATIVE HIGHER EDUCATION

Within our 2018 Annual Report, you will find more information about our approach to streamlining work-integrated learning provides a supportive, quality experience for our students and increases their job-readiness on graduation. And how some of our academic schools, such as the School of Nursing and Midwifery, commenced projects that blended work-integrated learning with social innovation.

We also introduced a number of new courses, and exit awards are now an integral part of our new coursework degrees.

TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING

Our comprehensive course content equips students with the skills and knowledge to help them succeed in a world of emerging technologies allowing for transformative learning to take place. Some examples include:

  • Our students experienced a more consistent web experience as we enhanced our online learning technologies resulting in faster and more responsive student platforms.
  • The Australia–Pacific LNG Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Central Hub was officially opened at CQUniversity’s Gladstone Marina campus in August 2018. The hub is the result of a partnership with ConocoPhillips, the downstream operator of Australia–Pacific LNG. It provides educational STEM resources for the community and professional development opportunities for teachers on how to embed STEM into the primary classroom.
  • Three Virtual Reality (VR) labs and two portable VR labs were developed in 2018 creating immersive experiences for students.
  • The Be Different Open Courses platform, CQUniversity’s flexible open courses environment, was launched in 2018.

Aligned to the themes of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, CQUniversity's People and Culture Directorate implemented ongoing programs and new initiatives to move CQUniversity forward in the areas of workplace health and safety, employee and industrial relations, Indigenous employment, equity, salaries, superannuation, systems, and professional development. Increasing CQUniversity’s capacity and ability to meet its current and future needs is the Directorate’s primary focus. In 2018, CQUniversity was recognised by employee survey specialists, the VOICE Project, as having Australia’s most engaged workforce.

At CQUniversity, we believe that education is for all and we actively promote opportunity and inclusiveness for students through our courses, support services and innovations. Aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SGD) 10: Reduced Inequalities, our innovative Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) 2016-2018 continued to influence the way the University performs its business to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander economic, health and social opportunities.

Data Tracking

We are proud to be recognised as Australia’s most inclusive university, with some of the highest percentages of students from disadvantaged, mature age, Indigenous, and first-generation backgrounds. This diversity reflects CQUniversity’s values and commitment to inclusive student access and participation in tertiary education. Our approach to data tracking incorporates data on Indigenous students as well as students from regional, rural and remote areas (refer to page 3 of our Annual Report.)

Aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development (SDG) 9: Sustainable Cities and Communities, our focus on social innovation continued throughout 2018.  Work commenced on integrating social innovation concepts and skills into a range of undergraduate degrees. Also, the successful launch of CQUniversity’s iChange social innovation MOOC has attracted more than 1000 employees and students to participate in the ground-breaking program.

In partnership with Social Traders, the University began a review of its social procurement activities and is developing a clearer view of how it can better support local businesses, social enterprise, and Indigenous businesses through regular and planned procurement opportunities.

2018 Sustainability Report

CQUniversity's Sustainability Report describes the University's efforts in developing and meeting our commitments to improving the environmental, social and indirect economic impacts of our future activities.

Aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, within the 2018 Sustainability Report you can read about our commitment to Clean Up Australia Day. In 2018 CQUni became the first Platinum Business Supporter University for Clean Up Australia. We collected nearly a tonne of waste from public lands in 2018 across 11 Clean Up Australia Day events.

Our Estate and Built Environment, Biodiversity, Economic Growth and Social and Community Engagement targets have been outlined in our Sustainability Report.  In this report you can read about the progress we are making in these areas towards a more sustainable and renewable community and future.

Within our Sustainability Report, you can read about our Waste, Energy, and Water consumption and production hard and soft targets. You can also see how we have contributed and focused on these areas to make improvements and move towards making and establishing more responsible and sustainable practices across the University. This aligns to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

Our Sustainability Report outlines a number of targets relating to the themes of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 15: Life in Land. In particular, our Biodiversity targets relate to increasing green land area with expansion of native plant species, and reporting against land development plan, and our Estate and Building Environment targets relate to best industry practice to achieve 5 green star building standards and increase renewable energy sources across our estate.
