Transcript

The most important thing to study abroad is to learn the knowledge taught and develop my ability to learn independently, instead of just getting the qualification. I believe I can achieve my goal here at CQUniversity. My name is Yueqiang Jia and I’m from Hebei, China. Currently I’m studying the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with a Civil major at CQUniversity. Before I made my decision, I did a lot of research and learned that an honours degree in Australia sits between a bachelor degree and a masters degree, which is a higher level than a bachelor degree. Secondly, there is an exponential demand for engineers in Australia and the graduate salary is higher than business courses.

My background is in scienceWhen I was considering which university I would go to, I learned that CQUniversity Australia is a fast-growing public university, and its engineering graduate employment rate and graduate salaries are top ranked in Australia. Engineering, so engineering was my first choice. At the same time, I considered the tuition fee is not as high as other universities. I’m studying at Rockhampton campus and have received a scholarship of 20%, reducing the overall tuition fee. Also, the living cost is lower than in metro cities, especially rental housing, which is less than half compared to the big cities. This can reduce the financial burden. Rockhampton is a peaceful town with a convenient lifestyle and a comfortable climate, a bit like Sanya in China. I hang out during the holidays and I have been to the beach once. It is stunning. The course structure and assessment methods here are very different from those in China. The final exams take up 50% and assignments take another proportion in the units I’ve been studying. Some assignments consist of group work. As long we complete the assignments as per the requirements and prepare for the exams well, there is little chance to fail the units.

As far as my personal feelings are concerned, CQUniversity has combined online teaching with classroom teaching extremely well. the teaching resources and materials, including coursework and teaching videos, can be found in the teaching management system, which can effectively improve the efficiency of preparation and review. I appreciate the help from my teachers. In our first class, the teachers told us that they are the ones who help us learn and succeed in our exams, so they are our mentors. They always answer my questions very patiently. My English has greatly improved in a short time here, because I’ve been exposed to an English environment. The majority of students here are domestic students, so I can learn a lot of native expressions. In the last term of my course, we can do work experience at a local company. Australian employers value practical work experience, so the work placement helps a lot. After graduation, I’ll be able to apply for a work visa in Australia, which allows me to have more work experience in the industry. I believe I’ll become an excellent engineer in the future.

CQU's top-ranked graduate employability and lower tuition were my choice factors. The unique course structure and supportive teachers facilitate learning, improving my English and offering valuable work experience opportunities. I'm excited about my future as an engineer.
