Widening Participation
HEPPP funding enables us to actively boost higher education participation rates for students from regional and remote, low socioeconomic, and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.
We achieve this by raising awareness of the opportunities higher education offers and empowering individuals to aim for broader career choices. We help students aspire to and achieve their educational goals, providing ongoing support as they progress through their studies and complete their qualifications.
At CQU, our widening participation programs span pre-access, access, and participation stages. Our pre-access activities build learner confidence, expand career knowledge, and inspire higher education aspirations. Our access activities ease the transition from secondary school to university and TAFE. Our participation activities offer continuous support through mental health, well-being, and learning initiatives.

Embedding Foundation Academic skills in literacy and numeracy into first-year core courses that provide a platform that prepares first-year students for success in higher education.
Mental Health and Well-Being programs that develop and implement initiatives that promote the mental health and well-being of students aiming to build upon their coping skills, knowledge and resources to enhance their capacity to be healthy and well, study productively, and cope with adversity while on their learning journey with CQU.
Peer Assisted Study Sessions assist students in their first-year core units with peer-led study groups. Designed to create independent learners, this program is led by fellow students who are highly skilled and specially trained. The goal is to create independent learners by sharing study tips and skills together with previous student experiences whilst incorporating ‘what to learn’ with ‘how to learn’.

This can include financial support to assist with living expenses, and non-deferrable costs such as textbooks, uniforms, technology, course-specific equipment, travel costs associated with compulsory residential schools and unpaid placement, accommodation, and general living expenses such as rent, groceries and fuel.
