John graduated with Distinction and achieved the Valedictorian Award for academic excellence. Together with his science degree, this served as an excellent starting point for his career in medicine. He went on to attain his medical degree from the University of Sydney.

As a junior doctor he realised that he had a strong interest in anaesthesia. To gain entry into the competitive specialist training program, he accepted a registrar position in Intensive Care. After completing his specialist training, in January 2014 John was admitted a fellow in the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He is now a Specialist Anaesthetist, consulting and administering adult and paediatric anaesthesia.

Special interests include perioperative medicine, clinical simulation, wellbeing of anaesthetists, airway management, communications in anaesthesia, and acute pain. His career also focuses on regional anaesthesia (including the role of ultrasound), teaching and research.

John is currently also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, largely reflecting his research and medical student teaching interests. Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with his family, sailing, and playing competitive tennis.
