Sandy was in private practice at the Queensland Bar for 19 years. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2009.
On 1 November 2012 he was sworn in as a judge of the District Court of Queensland. From 2012 to 2015 he also held a commission as Deputy President of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT). He is also a judge of the Queensland Planning and Environment Court and the Children's Court of Queensland
At the bar, he practiced mainly in all areas of Administrative, Industrial and Employment Law in both Federal and State jurisdictions. He was regularly retained by the State of Queensland to represent it in major industrial and administrative cases.
He was, for 10 years, a member of the Law Council of Australia's Industrial Law Committee in its Federal Litigation Section. Until his appointment to the bench, he was also a member of the Bar Association of Queensland's Professional Conduct Committee and was a coordinator of the pupilage programme for barristers in their first year of practice.
Outside of the law, he was President of the Ipswich Arts Foundation and a Trustee of the Ipswich Art Gallery for many years, and dedicated his personal support and skills to helping to effect a cultural transformation of his adopted community of Ipswich. Sandy and his wife Louise also engage extensively in philanthropy in support of the arts, health and education, particularly Indigenous education
Sandy was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws by CQUniversity in 2016 and is the winner of the 2018 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award.
