Dr John Beck
John graduated with Distinction and achieved the Valedictorian Award for academic excellence. Together with his science degree, this served as an excellent starting point for his career in medicine. He went on to attain his medical degree from the University of Sydney.
As a junior doctor he realised that he had a strong interest in anaesthesia. To gain entry into the competitive specialist training program, he accepted a position at the Rockhampton Hospital as a registrar in Intensive Care. After completing his specialist training, in January 2014 John was admitted a fellow in the Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. He is now a Specialist Anaesthetist at Nambour General Hospital, consulting and administering adult and paediatric anaesthesia.
His career focuses include regional anaesthesia (including the role of ultrasound), teaching and research. He plays a lead role in regional anaesthesia and airway management workshops, medical simulation, and exam preparation for trainees and is the Principal Investigator for a clinical trial on the role of femoral nerve blocks in total knee replacements.
John is currently also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, largely reflecting his research and medical student teaching interests. Outside of work, John enjoys spending time with his wife and son, and playing golf and tennis.
