I chose CQU Mackay for my studies as my older sister lived there and having some family around in my first year of university was important. I later transferred to Rockhampton rather than moving institutions to Brisbane or Toowoomba due to the friends I had made at Mackay and the quality of the course I was studying.
The structure of the degree helped me greatly due to the exposure to human resources, information technology and marketing alongside my major in accounting. I drew on this bigger picture thinking in the early days of my employment in the Graduate Program at BHP. I spent over four years in the BHP Graduate program. After some time at Shell, Powerlink, Tourism Queensland and APN, I am now employed at Rio Tinto in the Coal business unit as Rio Tinto Coal Australia Controller. This role ensures the accounting and reporting obligations are completed to the highest standard and provides direction for key transactions including acquisitions, restructures and disposals. The role provides management performance measures and associated variance analysis.
