At the time Brett was studying, there was virtually unlimited access to all manner of chromatographic and spectroscopic equipment, which set him up with the competence to walk into any laboratory, knowing precisely what he was doing. His experience with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy also equipped him to further his expertise, as it was a skill not possessed by many.
One of Brett’s favourite memories of studying for his research degree includes the rewarding fieldwork and not being afraid to get his “hands dirty”. Furthermore, Brett learned from his supervisor to “focus, use a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving, think before speaking, and enjoy what you do with confidence.”
After completing his studies, Brett worked in pharmaceutical lead research. He now owns a laboratory company called Applied Analytical Laboratories that has links to research collaborations with a number of Australian universities.
