First Peoples Think Tank

A CQUniversity Initiative for Northern Australia

A Unique Centre of Excellence

Henrietta Marrie

The First Peoples Think Tank (FPTT) is the first non-partisan Indigenous-led think tank in Australia, and is dedicated to providing independent, rigorous and practical solutions to some of the country’s most pressing problems.  It is an integral part of CQuniversity, and draws its origins from the CQU Cairns Community Impact Plan, which seeks to have a direct, tangible and positive impact on the industries, economies and communities of Cairns, Far North Queensland and Northern Australia. The FPTT will play a critical role as a catalyst for change, and will contribute to the development of high quality public policy for Australia’s future.  The FPTT was established to advance evidence-based social policy, to strengthen economic independence and education, and to offer a reliable and neutral voice to support political debate on issues that affect First Nation peoples.  It aims to become a national and global centre of excellence and be an important catalyst to grow and develop critical thinking and research leadership by linking researchers from around the world.

The FPTT aims to address identified gaps at national and international levels in the suite of Indigenous programs being offered.  With its national footprint and global reach, the FPTT will provide CQUniversity with the opportunity to take another step in bringing the University to Australia’s First Peoples, particularly across Northern Australia and Queensland.  The FPTT also provides international students, researchers and visitors to our region and wider Queensland with the opportunity to engage with and develop an understanding and appreciation of Australia’s First Peoples.

The objectives of the FPTT are to:

  • promote empowered, innovative, competitive and sustainable First Peoples’ communities
  • facilitate cooperation and collaboration between First Peoples, governments, the private sector and civil society
  • create a shared understanding about how First Peoples and their communities can contribute to national and global development.
