Central Queenslanders from all walks of life converged on CQUniversity’s Gladstone, Mackay and Rockhampton city campuses on 26 June for the TAFE Careers Expos.

The simultaneous events allowed residents to meet with staff to talk about study and career opportunities in 2018 and beyond.

Tracy Woods attended the Rockhampton event looking for a fresh start, after only recently moving to the city from Bundaberg with her husband.

“I worked in the public service for many years, but I haven’t worked for about four years,” she said.

“I do feel like I need to make a change and I might be interested in study in the health field.

“I got the information I needed and the staff were very helpful.”

Great-grandmother of one and grandmother of seven, Sharon James, visited the Mackay event to explore her options - starting with CQUni’s STEPS (Skills for Tertiary Education Preparation Studies) program, which provides a pathway for people wishing to gain entry to and excel in higher education.

“I feel like this year it’s time to give back to myself. I have a lot to learn and a lot to give,” the 64-year-old said.

“People ask, why do it now? But I enjoy reading a lot; I’m interested in workplace ethics, human services and innovation, and I know I can make a real difference in the world.”
