CQUni law graduate Nareeta Davis says she is shocked and excited to have won the Queensland Law Society's First Nations Legal Student of the Year Award for 2018.

The Cairns-based mother of two accepted the award during a glittering QLS dinner and presentation evening in Brisbane on 9 March.

"I was shocked to win because there were so many other high-quality applicants and finalists in my category," she says.

"I was particularly pleased that my Cairns friend Leah Cameron from Marrawah Law was announced as the QLS First Nations Lawyer of the Year at the same ceremony."

The award includes a trophy, a $1000 scholarship and funding to attend an Indigenous Law Conference and the next QLS Symposium.

Nareeta is continuing her long-time work role with the Business Recovery Division of the BDO Cairns accounting firm alongside the final few months of her Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice with the College of Law.

She is due to be admitted as a solicitor during a ceremony at the Cairns Supreme Court around July of this year and will begin her Masters of Applied Law studies with the College of Law around August.

Nareeta is eyeing a longer-term future in the field of family law but more broadly wants to help underprivileged and homeless people and to give them a voice.

"I have a busy life but I make sure I still have time for volunteering for community organisations," Nareeta says.

"I regularly purchase food for the homeless people of Cairns because I think that's the sort of thing a good person should do."

Nareeta was the 2017 Associate Vice-Chancellor's Medallist, recognising her academic and community engagement achievements while studying at CQUniversity Cairns.

CQUniversity Dean of Law Professor Stephen Colbran congratulated Nareeta and everyone who had contributed to her journey through the CQUni Law program.
