Theara Sorn, who migrated to Rockhampton from Cambodia is currently pursuing her passion for food by studying a Certificate II in Cookery in the Willby’s Training Restaurant at the Rockhampton City campus.

Theara Sorn wants to bring her love for Cambodia – and its cuisine – to the people of Rockhampton.

The CQUniversity Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) student is currently pursuing her passion for food by studying a Certificate II in Cookery in the Willby’s Training Restaurant at the Rockhampton City campus.

“I moved to Rockhampton four years ago and I’m hoping to get an apprenticeship as a chef,” Theara said.

“When I was young I liked to watch my mother cook and I ended up working at my sister’s restaurant in Phenom Penh.

“I just love to cook and I’m really hoping to become a chef so I can sell Cambodian food here in Australia. My dream is to have my own restaurant.”

She said she was enjoying the cookery course at Willby’s.

“I like how I get to do a lot of baking and learn how to make things from scratch,” she said.
AMEP Teacher Tina Stritzke said she was proud of Theara for pursuing her passion whilst studying English.

“It’s very daunting for a student who has English as a second language to join a VET program, however the Hospitality team have welcomed Theara and made her feel very comfortable,” Tina said.

“Theara commenced English classes with the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) in August last year and has shown great improvement in her understanding of English language and Australian culture.

“Under the AMEP, Theara’s child is funded for childcare so that she can attend English classes. This is a real bonus for AMEP eligible clients as Theara could not afford to send her daughter to childcare otherwise.”

AMEP is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training. For more information on the Adult Migrant English Program call 13 27 86, visit https://www.cqu.edu.au/courses/study-areas/work-and-study-preparation/amep  or www.education.gov.au/adult-migrant-english-program
