Joan Warner, CEO of Commercial Radio Australia

CQUniversity MBA graduate Joan Warner is a deserved winner of the 2015 Alumni Award in the 'Industry Contribution' category.

Ms Warner has not only steered the Commercial Radio industry through challenging changes to Cross Media Ownership legislation and a major audience measurement system review involving introduction of online tools.

As CEO of Commercial Radio Australia, she has also been prominent in supporting the Siren Awards for radio advertising and the ACRA Awards for radio talent and contributions.

Meanwhile, in her parallel role as Vice-President of a global industry forum known as World DMB, Ms Warner has been championing the roll-out of digital radio standards across the Asia-Pacific region.

She is currently in discussion with the Department of Communications to try to secure funding and support to extend digital radio services to regional areas.

The peak body leader also galvanised the radio industry in response to the devastating Indonesian tsunami in 2004.

She was instrumental in providing 40,000 radios to tsunami-affected areas within a few weeks to enable government and relief organisations to broadcast vital messages to survivors and refugees about water, food, medical aid and housing assistance. Ms Warner also initiated fundraising events run by Australian commercial radio stations and the simulcast of the Tsunami Relief Concert in Sydney (which provided millions of dollars for the disaster efforts).

As a prominent industry rep, Ms Warner was a panel member and presenter for last year's Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) Digital Broadcasting Symposium, speaking about Multi-platform Delivery of Radio and TV Content with the Focus of Smart Apps in Australia.

Ms Warner has previously been recognised through the WorldDMB 2012 Awards for Outstanding Service (presented in Leipzig, Germany), through a 2010 ABU Lifetime Achievement Award, and through a 2009 ACRA Award for Exceptional Contributions to the Metropolitan Roll-out of Digital Radio.

As well as her MBA from CQUniversity, Ms Warner has earned qualifications in the areas of Behaviour Management, Education, Teaching and Special Education, as well as completing a Company Directors' Course.
