Courtney Wedel is one of the fortunate CQUniversity students who have succeeded thanks to generous support from BHP Billiton Mitsui Coal Pty Ltd (BMC) throughout their university lives.

As a recipient of a BMC ‘Building My Career’ Scholarship, she was entitled to free accommodation and meals at the CQUni Mackay Ooralea Campus throughout the four years of her tertiary studies.

She has now graduated from a Bachelor of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography.

Courtney says she enjoyed a comfortable life on campus and access to the latest high-tech medical sonography equipment.

Her experienced was enhanced further through internship places, including at iMed in Bundaberg and CQ Radiology (CQR) in Gladstone.

The BMC partnership with CQUniversity was designed to focus on addressing community skills shortages but also to encourage students to study, live and work in the local area after graduation, and Courtney has certainly fulfilled that goal.

“I’m starting my professional career in Gladstone with CQR,” Courtney says.

“The BMC Building My Career scholarship was invaluable and fundamental in helping me complete my studies.”

The Bachelor of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography is the first course of its kind in Australia.

Available on-campus in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Mackay and Perth, it allows students to enter a niche medical profession with no prior degree in health sciences.

Medical Sonographers take diagnostic images using ultrasonic equipment to create still, video or 3D studies of anatomy and diagnostic data. They scan, analyse and modify images to optimise the information and require highly developed patient care and communication skills.
