Information Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Apprentices

Clothing

All apprentices are required to adhere to standard safety dress standards when attending their blocks. This attire includes:

  • Long sleeved cotton drill shirts
  • Cotton drill trousers or cotton drill shorts with work socks
  • Steel cap shoes or boots
  • Clear safety glasses (AS/NZS 1137 indoor (IO) glasses
  • Hair protection

Failure wot wear correct safety clothing will result in the refusal to enter workshops. 

The dress standards listed represent the minimum standard which will provide adequate protection against certain hazards in the working environment. In addition to these standards regulations 61 - 71 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act, in part VII, "Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment" apply.

Jewellery and watches shall be removed during practical work in metal machining, or while undertaking any activity which may result in injury as a result of jewellery becoming caught or entangled.

All safety shoes shall conform to AS 2210 (all safety footwear shall incorporate protective steel toecaps complying with the relevant requirements of this standard). Protective shoes shall have covered uppers and non-slip soles for the working environment.

Sunscreen shall be used to provide protection for exposed skin in outdoor activities.

Clothing worn by persons who may come in contact with fire, heat and molten metal shall be manufactured from a fire resistant material such as 100% cotton drill.

Equipment and Resource Material

Apprentices are required to bring along the the following equipment to their blocks:

  • Notebook or notepad
  • Coloured pencils
  • Pencils and pens
  • Ruler
  • Eraser
  • Scientific Calculator (Casio FX-82AU
  • Stage 1, 2 and 3 apprentices must bring their student ID card and trainee gas handling licence to class
  • Stage 2 and 3 apprentices must bring their current low voltage rescue, CPR certificate or statement of attainment to show they are competent

Textbooks

It is requested that the following textbooks be purchased prior to commencement of classes:

  • Australian Refrigeration and Air-conditioning - Volume 1 and 2, 4th Edition by Graham Boyle (http://wpc.westone.wa.gov.au)
  • Electrical Principles for Electrical Trades by Jenneson (www.eabooks.com.au)

Copies of recommended textbooks are available from the library depending on availability. Borrowed books must be returned prior to completion of block.

Personal Protective Equipment

Eye protection in the form of safety spectacles or safety clip-ons (if you wear non-safety prescription spectacles) is to be provided by each apprentice. It must carry the Australian Standards Approval for the Code AS1337 "Industrial Eye Protection". If there is any doubt you will be required to obtain a pair that does comply with code.

If wearing prescription spectacles then safety clip-ons must be worn, unless the lenses are industrially hardened or made of CR39. Your optometrist will be able to advise you on this. However, if there is doubt then you will be required to obtain and wear a pair of safety clip-ons.

Hair protection shall be worn, when working around moving machinery and/or when a designated area is in operation. The hair protection should be in form of a peak cap especially designed for industrial use. It should also come with a snood capable of fully containing the hair. A cap of fire resistant material shall be worn when working in the various welding areas. You will be responsible for providing this protection.

Ear protection will be provided by the campus. If you wish to purchase your own, please ensure that it carries the Australian Standard Approval.

Codes and Standards

Due the changing nature of Australian Standards and reference material, you will be advised of the necessary books required for each stream at the commencement of your common stream TAFE block.

Conduct

Use of mobile and electrical devices

Please be aware that the use of mobile phones, iPods, MP3 players and other electrical devices is not permitted in the classroom at any time. The only exception is if a student has sought special permission from the teacher prior to class due to an emergency situation. The use of a mobile phone as a calculator is also not acceptable.

This regulation has been implemented by all teaching staff and management of CQUniversity. The directive is in line with industry standards and clause 8.15 Student Responsibilities and Obligations in the CQUniversity Student Rules Policy (TAFE). Regulations will be monitored by teaching staff. 

Signs have been posted in all classrooms and workshops to remind students of this regulation. Any student failing to abide by this directive will be referred to the Manager – Vocational Training.

Conditions and behaviour while on campus 

Conditions and behaviour in campus workplaces are governed by the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011 and the provisions of this Act will be strictly applied.

 Section 28 of this Act states: While at work, a worker must—

  • Take reasonable care for his or her own health and safety; and
  • Take reasonable care that his or her acts or omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of other persons; and
  • Comply, so far as the worker is reasonably able, with any reasonable instruction that is given by the person conducting the business or undertaking to allow the person to comply with this Act; and
  • Co-operate with any reasonable policy or procedure of the person conducting the business or undertaking.

Enrolment and Payment Information

Students paying their own fees

The Student Contribution Fee is $1.60 per nominal hour of each Competency Unit (see your Training Plan for hours associated to each unit).

CQUniversity has recently commenced a new process to pre-enrol all apprentices prior to Block start dates. You will therefore receive an invoice for your enrolment fees with a due date of the first day of your block. It is your responsibility to ensure these fees are paid by the due date. Invoices are currently being sent by mail but will soon be sent electronically to your CQUniversity student email address. Please ensure you regularly check your email account for this reason. 

Employers paying fees

If your employer has previously agreed to pay your fees and has provided CQUniversity with an Authority to Invoicewe will invoice your employer for all enrolment fees. These fees will be due on the first day of your block. For apprentices covered by the Construction Skills Queensland funding rebate your employer will be invoiced for 50 percent of your fees with the remainder to be covered by the rebate. 

To set up an employer pays agreement an Authority to Invoice is required. Completed forms should be returned to VET-Contract-Management@cqu.edu.au.

Concession Price Eligibility

To be eligible to pay the concession price you must be in one of the following circumstances and provide the necessary documentation at time of enrolment/payment:

  1. Apprentices who are less than 17 years of age at the end of February, of the year of study and have not completed Year 12. You will need to present your birth certificate or proof of age card. An extract or a copy of either of these that has been signed by a Justice of the Peace (JP) is also acceptable. To locate a JP ask at the campus, any police station, court house, school, bank or solicitor's office.
  2. Apprentices who are holders of Health Care Card/Health Benefits Card. You will need to present your card, or a copy that has been signed by a JP. 
  3. Students who identify Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander will need to indicate their status at enrolment.

Payment Options

In Person

Payment by eftpos and credit card can be made at Admissions at Rockhampton City, Rockhampton North, Yeppoon, Gladstone City, Gladstone Marina, Mackay City and Mackay Oorlea campuses. BPay will also be available soon.

By Phone

Payment by credit card can be made by through the CQUniversity Student Advice Team on 132 786 (please have your Enrolment Selection Form handy to quote the availability, name and unit details to the enrolment adviser).

Payment plans (Time to Pay)

As a student you may be eligible to pay your course fees and charges in installments through a Payment Plan. Full details on Payment Plans can be found here.

To apply, you must submit a completed Payment Plan Application and Direct Debit Request

  • Payment plans may be refused where inadequate identification is provided, the delegated officer determines an unsatisfactory credit history, or payment terms on previous Payment Plan arrangements have not be met.
  • Your application will be assessed within 48 hours. You may contact Admissions two working days after you submit your application, in person or by telephone to check if your application has been approved and if your enrolment can be processed.
  • A minimum deposit of $75 or 20 percent of the total cost of enrolment, whichever is the greater, is payable at the time of enrolment.
  • The total of your payment plan must be completed at least 30 days prior to the end of the program for which it has been approved.
  • Cancellation of enrolment (withdrawing) does not necessarily cancel your obligation to make all payments under the payment plan. Unless you cancel your enrolment before courses commence you may still owe unpaid fees, regardless of whether you have actually attended courses.
  • If you do not meet your obligations you will be refused further Payment Plans. Overdue debts may be referred to a debt collection agency for recovery and this may result in you incurring extra costs.

Time to Pay will not be extended where:

  • VET FEE-HELP for the course in question is available.
  • The enrolment relates to an Adult and Community Education (ACE) course (short course).
  • Recovery action was/has been initiated on previous payment plan.
  • The total fee payable is less than $75.
  • The student is under 18 years of age, unless a guarantor is agreed to by the University.

You may also elect to have your repayments made by Centrepay from your Centrelink payments or by Direct Debit. Please see below for details.

Direct Debit 

You may wish to pay your fees via Direct Debit. To do this, you must:

  1. On enrolment submit a Payment Plan Application and a Direct Debit Request.
  2. CQUniversity will lodge your Direct Debit Request. The repayments will be deducted from your nominated account on the payment due date. If the due date for payment falls on a non-working day or a national public holiday, the payment will be processed on the next working day. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have sufficient funds in the nominated account on the due date.

Centrepay

If you wish to pay your fees directly from your Centrelink payments you must:

  1. Submit a Payment Plan Application, Centrepay and Direct Debit Request.
  2. CQUniversity will lodge your Centrepay Deduction form with Centrelink. You will receive a letter from Centrelink advising you when your repayments will commence.

Please be aware that any failure to make payment will result in the termination of the agreed payment plan, resulting in the full outstanding balance becoming immediately due and payable. Even if you withdraw from the program, you may still owe for unpaid fees if the courses have commenced regardless of whether you have actually attended these courses.

Travel and Accommodation Information and Claim Process

The Department of Education, Training and Employment provides a travel and accommodation subsidy to eligible apprentices and trainees to subsidise their expenses, if they have to travel more than 100 kilometres return, to attend their closest training organisation. To apply for the subsidy visit www.apprenticeshipsinfo.qld.gov.au and click on 'Travel and Accommodation Subsidies' in the 'Quick links' section. If you apply online you can submit your claims prior to the end of your training block while still at college. To apply online you will need to enter your surname, first name and date of birth, and your 9-digit training contract registration number.  

Please note that you can also submit hard copy claim forms but payment will be processes faster if the application is received electronically. If you choose to submit a hardcopy form you will need to have your teacher sign off on the document on the last day of your block and will also need administration at your local campus to stamp and approve.
