This short Online Course is an introduction to conversational Mandarin Chinese. This course is ideal for those wanting to gain a fundamental language skill for everyday use and communication in Mandarin.

Mandarin Chinese is the official language of the People’s Republic of China and is spoken by almost one-fifth world’s population. In recent years, CQUniversity and its broader communities have increased connections and activities with Chinese counterparts in educational, academic, cultural and business exchanges and relations.

Conversational Mandarin for Beginners is a short course designed for staff from within the University and members of local communities who are interested in gaining fundamental spoken Mandarin for everyday use and communication purpose. The course is also to deliver Chinese cultural awareness training to the students while learning the language.

The fee for this short course will be $185.00.

Professional Recognition

Upon successful completion of the course students will be awarded 15 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours and a CQUniversity Certificate of Completion.

The course is also to deliver Chinese cultural awareness training to the students while learning the language.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify the basic phonetic system of Pinyin and the four tones

2. Identify the basic sentence structures of Mandarin Chinese

3. Outline simple conversations in Mandarin under the situations relating to language topics of this course.

The course consists of the following eight topics which are related to everyday conversations of Mandarin users:

  1. Greetings
  2. Asking date and time
  3. Asking name and nationalities
  4. Do you speak Mandarin
  5. Talking about family
  6. Dining in a Chinese restaurant
  7. Shopping
  8. Talking about the weather.

Upon completion of the course, students will have gained a basic understanding of the Mandarin Chinese language including its pronunciation (the 'Pinyin' system), tones and sentence structures. Through learning and practising the content of the course, students should be able to conduct simple conversations with Chinese speakers under the situations relating to the language topics.

Course Information

Online resources and tutorials delivered by Zoom (web conferencing platform).

Zoom is a free web-based video conferencing platform using HD technology to enable live webinars and interactive learning. Weekly webinars will be recorded for students to review. All webinar links will be included in the course.
