The Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business is a multidisciplinary qualification designed to enable you to gain entry into the legal profession combined with business knowledge and skills.

During your legal studies, you will learn about legal procedures and key legislation, develop skills necessary to identify, analyse and evaluate facts in relation to legal frameworks. The core areas of the law degree match those required for admission to the legal profession including statutory interpretation, criminal law and procedure, contracts, torts, constitutional law, equity, administrative law, property, company, evidence, professional responsibility and civil procedure.

During your business studies, you may choose to major in accounting, financial planning, human resource management, management, marketing, or property. Depending on your chosen business major there are a number of professional associations that you may be eligible to apply for.

You will benefit from the flexibility to study online to allow you to balance your study, work, family and other commitments. With flexibility in mind, you have the option to undertake experiential learning opportunities including moot simulations, developing legal apps, pro bono community service opportunities and the option to seek out work placements.

The Bachelor of Laws prepares you for a career as a legal professional. Aside from the traditional roles as a solicitor, barrister or in-house counsel, a law degree is useful for careers in academia, business, the public service and politics.

The Bachelor of Business is your gateway to a wide variety of positions in both the public and private sectors. On completing the course, depending on your major, you will be qualified to work:

Structure & Availability

Course structure

The Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business consists of 24 law units and 15 business units. This makes a total of 39 units. Within the law component, you will study 16 core law units and will select either eight units from liberal law or legal practice, or four units from two of the following areas; liberal law, commercial law or legal practice. Within the business component of this course, you will study seven core units and one eight-unit major, or two four-unit minors. 

The course is designed to give you a strong grounding in both the disciplines of law and business. Assessment is overseen through university governance processes, along with the discipline's pastoral responsibility. The course adheres to CQUniversity's academic standards and continual renewal and improvement framework.

Accounting Major

Accounting is transitioning into a new era influenced by data and technology and this major is ideal if you have an interest in careers across auditing, banking, consulting, or corporate finance. This major will provide you with advanced knowledge in financial accounting and management accounting, and provide you with an understanding of taxation law and company law to round out your accounting knowledge. 

Financial Planning Major

Accredited with the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA), this is an ideal major for anyone wishing to practice as a financial advisor. In this major you will build knowledge across personal financial planning, business finance, investment portfolios, and retirement and superannuation. You will also examine the role of insurance and risk management in client focused financial planning as well as estate planning. 

Human Resource Management Major

Human resource management is central to the success of any organisation and this major will prepare you to develop your skills and expertise in human resource management, industrial relations and management functions including attracting, selecting, motivating and developing talent.

Management

The management major will future-proof your skills to pursue management roles across any sector. In this major you will develop technical knowledge of business finance, enterprise systems and operational management, combined with soft skills in people management underpinned by the study of human behaviour at work. You will graduate with a sought-after skillset capable of leading and motivating teams to improve productivity and innovation. 

Marketing

Develop a versatile skillset valued across all industries and learn to successfully connect with customers and implement demand generation marketing activities. You will be introduced to consumer behaviour and the broader marketing mix, and examine the important role of digital marketing in any marketing strategy. You will build skills in performing marketing research, including how to use insights and analytics to inform marketing decision-making.

Property

If you have an interest in a career pathway in property development or the property industry, this major is an ideal option that will provide you with highly contextual industry knowledge of property law, contract law, business finance, property economics, property and asset management, construction and property investment, and finance.

Accounting major
Upon successfully completing this course with the Accounting Major and the Professional Accounting Minor, you will be able to apply for admission to either CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.


Financial Planning major
Approved under the Financial Adviser Standards, this is an ideal major for anyone wishing to practice as an accountant and financial advisor. You'll develop expertise across personal financial planning, business finance, investment portfolios, and retirement and superannuation. To round out your knowledge, you'll also examine the role of insurance and risk management in client-focused financial planning as well as estate planning.


Human Resource Management major
You'll graduate with the skills and knowledge to handle a variety of contemporary HR issues across all types of organisations. This major will expand on conflict and negotiation, organisational change, recruitment, performance and the underlying concepts and techniques.


Management major
Expand your expertise to include management theories surrounding strategy and change, operations, organisational behaviour, quality management and corporate governance. 


Marketing major
Excel with a versatile skillset valued across all industries as you learn to successfully connect with customers and implement demand generation marketing activities. You'll explore consumer behaviour and the broader marketing mix plus, examine the importance of digital integration. To complement your skills in delivering creative strategies, you'll also perform market research, to understand insights and analytics to inform marketing decision-making.


Property major
Accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API), this major will certify you as a Property Practitioner. Combined with your professional accounting qualification, you will graduate with a competitive skill set that is highly valued, especially in regional Australia. This major is highly contextual and embeds industry knowledge of property law, contract law, business finance, property economics, property and asset management, construction and property investment, and finance.
 

Human Resource Management minor
In this minor, you will gain exposure to the core functions of talent recruitment and retention. You will also develop insight into conflict and negotiation as well as learn perspectives on change management within an organisation.


Marketing minor
Tailor your studies with this minor for insight into the value of marketing fundamentals. You'll explore consumer behaviour, product development and branding, marketing communication and digital marketing concepts.


Startups and Entrepreneurship minor
Begin your journey towards an exciting career within startups and entrepreneurship. Within this minor, you'll learn the laws around startups and intellectual property. Plus, you'll explore product development, branding and innovation theories.

Legal Practitioners Admissions Board of Queensland

The degree is an approved academic qualification for admission to the legal profession. Graduates are also required to undertake a further period of practical legal training before being admitted as a legal practitioner.



Professional Practice - Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA)

Course Structure 3 - Financial Planning Major

The Financial Planning major is an approved qualification to attain a professional designation in financial planning as per the Corporations (Relevant Providers Degrees, Qualifications and Courses Standard) Determination 2021. Visit Financial Adviser Standards for more information.

Professional Practice and Experience - BUSN13004

The undertaking of a business internship is an option in this unit. It will take the form of an industry placement. Work experience in industry directed by the provider, within the secured place of employment. 12 weeks @ 20 hours (maximum) = 240 hours total

Legal Practicum - LAWS12073

Students will be able to undertake at their option an overseas or domestic practicum placement or engagement with a complex work simulation.

The Indicative First-Year Fee is the approximate cost of enrolling in this course for one full-time academic year (eight units over two terms) for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). Commonwealth Supported Places

This course has Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) available, and as a domestic student, you'll be offered a CSP, provided you meet CSP eligibility requirements. CSPs are subsidised by the Australian Government, meaning you are only required to pay the student contribution rather than full tuition fees.

HECS-HELP Loan

You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP government loan if you are offered a CSP. HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that assists you in paying your student contributions.
