The Master of Financial Planning consists of 12 units of study, where eight articulate from the graduate diploma which is accredited by the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA). This course is appropriate for new entrants looking to meet education standards and existing financial planners who are seeking comprehensive knowledge in the field. The Master of Financial Planning offers advanced content, building on the topics covered within CQUniversity's Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning. The course provides for a wider range of study beyond the minimum necessary for professional practice.

Topics covered include superannuation and wealth planning, retirement and estate planning, risk management and insurance, taxation law, money and capital market analysis, international financial management and professional advice. Application for accreditation of the Master of Financial Planning is currently pending with FASEA.
For Practicing Financial Planners

The Financial Planning industry has now finalised the educational requirements for Financial Planners. Released in January 2019, the Education Pathways Policy outlines the education pathways for practising and new entry Financial Planners. CQUniversity has been proactive in this process and our Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning and Master of Financial Planning has been developed in response to these requirements.

Study requirements
For existing advisers with:
  • no degree; or
  • a non-relevant degree

The Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning will allow you to upgrade to the minimum standards required to continue to practise.
The Master of Financial Planning has an additional four units and is ideal for those wishing to advance their qualifications and continue their study.
Both the Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning and the Master of Financial Planning are fully accredited by the Financial Advisers Standards and Ethics Agency (FASEA).

Alternatively, advisers without an undergraduate degree can choose to study an approved degree from our available business and law courses.
Existing advisers needing to meet minimum standards must complete the Graduate Diploma or Masters by no later than 1 January 2024.

For existing advisers with a relevant degree.

To continue to practice, you are required to complete the following three FASEA approved bridging units and an additional FASEA approved unit to meet education standards:

  • FINC20029 Financial Advice and Corporations Law
  • FINC20030 Behavioural Finance and Client Relationships
  • FINC20031 Ethical Financial Planning Practice
These units can be configured into the Graduate Certificate in Financial Planning or studied as non-award units.
Completed by no later than 1 January 2024.

For existing advisers with an approved degree.
To continue to practise, you are only required to complete the following single bridging unit covering the FASEA Code of Ethics:
  • FINC20031 Ethical Financial Planning Practice

To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must demonstrate one of the following:

1. A completed Australian Bachelor degree, or equivalent qualification, in any discipline from a recognised tertiary institution OR

2. A completed Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning, or equivalent, OR

3. A completed Diploma of Financial Planning, or equivalent, current registration as a certified practicing financial planner, and 5 years relevant work experience.

Advanced standing may be awarded to prospective students who have additional relevant experience in the financial planning industry and who may have completed formal and informal training. In all cases, external articulation will be considered in accordance with Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) guidelines, CQU policies and industry accreditation requirements.

Upon completion, you will meet the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority education standards to practice as a Financial Planner or Estate Planner. You will be able to take a number of career directions including financial and estate planning in either self-employed capacity or employed by large financial services institutions.

This course includes the eight core units in CL65 Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning which is accredited by the Financial Advisers Standards and Ethics Agency (FASEA) as fulfilling the educational requirements for professional practice. FINC20029 Financial Advice and Corporations Law, FINC20030 Behavioural Finance and Client Relationships, and FINC20031 Ethical Financial Planning Practice are accredited FASEA 'Bridging Units'. These units are core units in the Master of Financial Planning.
Application for accreditation of the Master of Financial Planning is currently being considered by the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA).


This course is part of a set of postgraduate Financial Planning courses that are currently accredited with the Financial Planning Education Council (FPEC) as fulfilling the educational requirements for professional practice.

FEE-HELP and payment options

FEE-HELP is the loan scheme provided the Australian Government to help eligible students pay their tuition fees through a loan.

Eligible students can use a FEE-HELP loan to pay for all or some of their tuition fees. If you elect to use a FEE-HELP loan, this means that you will defer payment of your tuition fees and repay your FEE-HELP loan when your income is above the compulsory repayment threshold (the 2018-2019 income year threshold is $51,957 or above).

You must meet specific eligibility requirements to be able to use FEE-HELP assistance.

If you are not eligible for a FEE-HELP loan, or you are required to pay your tuition fees upfront, you will need to pay your fees no later than the census date for the term in which you are studying.
