Overview

Mathematics is used to solve many types of problems. This online micro-credential will introduce you to Differentiation. This includes differentiating polynomials and basic functions, differentiating with the product rule, quotient rule and chain rule, plotting curves using the derivative; and basic applications of differentiation to solve mathematical problems.

Students who successfully complete the set of 7 micro-credentials* developed from the unit MATH40252, Technical Mathematics for University, (which forms part of the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) CL03), may be eligible for credit transfer, pending all other entry requirements to the Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) CL03 are being met, as automatic entry will not apply.

Duration:

24 hours online self-paced learning.

Students can access the micro-credential for one year from enrolment.


  1. Determine continuity and limit of functions 
  2. Find the first derivative of a simple polynomial function using limits
  3. Find the derivative of various functions by rule including product, quotient and chain rules
  4. Use the derivative to find the slope of the tangent to a curve at a given point
  5. Find the higher derivatives of a function
  6. Use derivatives to sketch curves.

Assessment

One Exam (Downloaded document with 24 hours to complete and submit).
