Hi, I'm Dr Candice Pullen, I am the discipline lead here at the university for clinical measurement sciences.
So the unique thing about our course is tha.t with clinical measurement sciences here, we actually have a multi-disciplinary approach to our program. So when students enrol in clinical measurement science here, we do cardiac science, we do respiratory science, neuroscience and reduce sleep science with students which is all your main disciplines within clinical measurement.
Students when they enrol in the program will start off with a common first year which is all our basic science units, so we'll give students a really great foundation, really solid foundation, in anatomy physiology, we do chemistry, we do professional practice units with students. And then from second year onwards we start to introduce students to their discipline specific units, so they'll start learning about clinical applications we'll start going into cardiac science, more detail into respiratory and neurobiology. And then in third year we build upon that even further taking you into advanced units. So learning about why we do the tests we do in the hospital, how we they actually work, how they apply to patients and then how we can integrate all of that into actually following a patient from their presentation all the way through to their treatments.
But a lot of our residential schools are down here in our labs, where we have all the equipment that you will need. Once we have you confident working in a lab environment, cause it's very different to working outside, so once we have you confident in that lab environment and understanding the basic procedures, and how to function in the environment we then send you off into an actual work placement or a working hospital to do your workplaces. That way we get you actually working within industry so, number one you're learning the content or you're cementing down content that we've taught you with the technical skills, but you're also learning how that particular industry works and how that area functions.
Clinical measurement science, once you graduate you'll be a clinical measurement scientist. That allows you to work in the hospitals as a clinician, you'll be able to go into either a respiratory lab and do all the lung function tests with patients. If you go into a cardiac lab you’ll be doing ECG analysis, potentially expanding further to working in echocardiography or in a catheter lab. For neuroscience and for sleep, two of them kind of go hand in hand, but you may be ending up in a hospital working as a neuroscientist conducting EEGs on patients looking for various sleep disorders and just really doing a lot of the diagnostic testing with patients.
If one thing our degree gives you is that you come out having specialised in all the different areas of clinical measurements, so the scope for movement is just amazing and you're not going to be bored at any point in time. Whether you choose to do cardiac or respiratory science or neuro or sleep, you're constantly going to be challenged in a day-to-day basis.
