Built to Thrive: creating buildings and cities that support individual well-being and community prosperity

The 43rd AUBEA conference focuses on the human dimensions of the built environment and the various ways buildings and cities may contribute to individual wellbeing and community prosperity.

Being inspired by Winston Churchill’s famous 1943 quote that “we shape our buildings, and afterwards, our buildings shape us”, the interactions and mutual relationships of human and built environment are particularly explored. The conference aims to highlight the built environment professionals’ responsibilities in society as well as the important role of built environment theories and principles, learning and teaching practices, processes and economics, and regulations and policies to bring about social changes. This is specifically considered from the viewpoints of ‘social innovations’; that is the social practices that strive to find ways to meet social needs in a better way than the existing solutions to contribute to sustainable growth and development.

We invite academics from disciplines of building education, design, architecture, construction, management, urban planning, and economics to contribute to the discussion on the five sub-themes of the conference as follows:

People and Skills

Addressing the skills and attributes of graduates and practicing professionals of built environment disciplines that will contribute to designing, constructing, and managing buildings and cities that support individuals and community to thrive. It includes but is not limited to:

  • teamwork skills/becoming team players,
  • reflection in action/becoming reflective practitioners, and
  • resilience and empathy/being resilient and empathetic.

Theories and Principals

The theories and principles behind buildings and cities built for individuals and communities to thrive. It includes but is not limited to:

  • architectural design theories and principles,
  • major theories of human-environment relations,
  • theories of environmental perception such as Gestalt theories of perception and behaviour setting theory,
  • theories and principles of urban design and town planning, and
  • universal and sustainable design principles.

Learning and Teaching

This sub-theme addresses aspects of built environment education i.e. curricula and pedagogical practices to prepare graduates capable of creating buildings and cities for individuals and communities to thrive. It addresses studio-based as well as ICT-driven teaching and learning i.e. online design studios, adoption of VR/AR in construction teaching and learning, and application of real-time game in teaching.

Processes and Economics

Exploring the processes and economics applied in particular to built environment but also to the construction industry as a whole. Leading areas of processes and economics include cutting edge technologies and collaborative practices. The list represents:

  • digital engineering applications such as virtual reality, augmented reality, BIM or Building Information Modelling,
  • lean and value management applications,
  • risk shared contracts such as Alliance, PPP or Public-Private Partnerships,
  • collaborative project delivery methods such as IPD or Integrated Project Delivery, and
  • project scheduling tools such as Last Planner System and more to expand the list.

Regulations and Policies

This theme explores how effective have the existing range of building codes and regulations been in ensuring community safety. What, if any, changes need to be made to restore public confidence in the sector?
