Engineering - Undergraduate Programs
Whether you are a school leaver wishing to begin a career in engineering or physics, or you are already working in industry and want to upgrade your knowledge, skills and qualifications, CQUni has a program of study that is right for you. We are committed to study programs that have a strong emphasis on professional practice and learning in context. Each of our engineering programs currently offers civil, electrical and mechanical specialisations.
Our Bachelor of Engineering (Co-op) program is tailored to school leavers who want to include structured work experience in their program of study. At the end of your second year and during your fourth year of study, you will go on a six-month work placement. This work experience provides a great opportunity for you to find out what engineering is really about and you get paid! It also gets you out of the classroom and out into industry where you can start to build your professional network. Our co-op students are often offered graduate employment while they are on co-op placement so this is a great way to kick-start your career!
The Bachelor of Engineering program is available both on-campus and in distance mode. It is suitable for those students who want to become a professional engineer but who do not require the work placements. Since the program is available by distance delivery, you can study this program even if you are working full-time or you do not live near a CQUni campus. We also offer the Bachelor of Engineering Technology and Associate Degree of Engineering which are both available in distance mode.
Building and construction play a crucial role in the safety, amenity and economy of the society that we live in. How successfully these outcomes are achieved depends upon the knowledge and professionalism of the various participants in this process, with an understanding of each party's responsibilities vital to creating a final product that achieves desired community outcomes. The School of Engineering and Built Environment at CQUniversity offers three core program streams that allow students to study in the following core construction disciplines;
- Building design; students study concepts of design and construction relevant to all classes and types of buildings, with an emphasis on sustainability
- Building surveying; students study essential safety and amenity concepts and requirements to ensure that all types and classes of buildings comply to the Building Code of Australia, with specific emphasis on fire safety and accessibility
- Project management; students study the critical concepts necessary to ensure that projects are constructed on time and within budget, with an emphasis on state of the art project management systems.
All Built Environment courses comprise core elements of foundation knowledge that provide students with the knowledge base necessary to work in this challenging and exciting environment. As students progress through their program they are introduced to course specific modules that provide the required degree of specialisation needed to succeed in their chosen program. All courses are delivered by industry practitioners or specialist academic staff, ensuring that students are exposed to the latest current trends relevant to their industry and program.
Reflecting the student trend toward integrating work and study commitments, all Built Environment courses are offered in full flex mode, giving students the freedom to study at a time and place of their choosing. Additionally, CQUniversity embraces the latest learning technologies, offering flex students with state of the art on-line learning and interaction with lecturers and course content. This delivery method provides students with an integrated learning experience that is equal to the traditional on-campus delivery in achieving positive learning outcomes.
The Australian minerals and mining sector is one of the most diverse, stimulating and rewarding in the world today, experiencing unprecedented growth due to the increasing global demand for minerals commodities. This growth is underpinned by the latest technologies and a reliance on highly skilled professionals, who enjoy not only financial rewards and professional advancement, but the opportunity for extensive travel, flexible working and lifestyle conditions with options to work in remote, regional or international locations.
At CQUniversity, we have an excellent and long established reputation of actively engaging with industry to provide application-based education and practically-focused engineers and geoscientists for the mining and resources industry. Developed in consultation and partnership with BMA (BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance), Anglo American Metallurgical Coal and Xstrata Coal, these custom-designed programs ensure that you gain the knowledge and skills to understand the 'big picture' of mining and minerals processing and to become potential leaders of cutting-edge industrial organisations in your area of expertise. We understand the educational needs of the mining industry and provide the learning environments that prepare students to be good at their job. We have a dedicated team of mining and geology educators with extensive experience in the geosciences, mining, mineral processing and mine management.
SUN (Start Uni Now) provides Year 11 and 12 students an opportunity to get a head-start on their career by enrolling in university courses whilst still in high school. Students can undertake a range of introductory and specific CQUniversity courses, either online (distance) or face-to-face (internal), and combine them with their regular high school work.
CQUniversity's Associate Degrees in Mining and Geoscience are based on the project-based learning philosophy which offers the opportunity to learn in context. This approach is designed to produce work-ready graduates with industry-relevant skills. These programs prepare graduates with the technical skills to provide support for mining engineers, metallurgists, surveyors and geologists at mine sites and in the field. Associate Degree of Mining graduates will be involved in the design, planning and operations of mines, mineral and coal processing plants. They typically find employment as Mine Technologists or Assistant Engineers and support Mining Engineers as para-professionals.
Associate Degree of Geoscience graduates enjoy a wide variety of challenging career options across a range of industries and government sectors. They typically work in positions in national and international public and private industry sectors including the mining, geophysical exploration, energy, transportation, construction, and education industries.
CQUniversity and University of Queensland's Partnership Program offers a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering, sharing the program's delivery between the two institutions.
CQUniversity offers a suite of graduate, post-graduate and research opportunities to emerging and existing technical professionals, engineers, managers and supervisors in mining and allied industries who are looking to maintain their professional development in areas such as technical engineering, leadership, project management and business, with a view to securing a formal postgraduate qualification.
The CQUniversity Mining and Geoscience programs provide a structured approach to professional development that enables you to take the next step towards a better future. Our programs are flexible and whilst providing a great opportunity for schools leavers, are custom designed for the professional development of people currently employed in mining services industries, mining technology, minerals processing, safety and mine management roles. CQUniversity programs are available by distance education, allowing you to maintain your employment and retrain at the same time. Distance education means that personal and professional development is available irrespective of geographical location. You can study anytime, anywhere!
Postgraduate - Course Work Programs

CQUniversity offers a series of Postgraduate qualifications for project managers and program directors designed to achieve best practice in the knowledge and management of infrastructure and resource projects.
The Graduate Certificate in Project and Program management is a qualification targeted at providing practicing project managers and directors with the 'hard' skills to run projects in the most challenging environment.
The Graduate Diploma in Project and Program management enables the project manager or director to build on the foundations of the Certificate and develop 'soft' skills in leadership and the application of governance to projects. With a strong emphasis on ethics, the Diploma meets the needs of the partnering projects between resource infrastructure developers, and government and sub-contractors. Through the use of case studies the Diploma prepares the project manger for senior responsibility in any organisation.
