Additional Placement Information – The Catholic Education Strand
CQUniversity students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) courses can apply to Catholic Education Office (Rockhampton Diocese) to be accepted into the Catholic Education strand of their course.
The Catholic Education strand of the courses includes four units of study that cover the knowledge and skills required for accreditation to teach in a Catholic school and to teach Religious Education using the Diocesan Religion curriculum.
Acceptance into the Catholic Education strand results in some variations to the professional experience requirements for pre-service teachers outlined in the core course structure. These variations, which require the support of supervising teachers and administrative staff in Catholic schools in the Diocese, are:
- pre-service teachers must complete the professional experience placements for Professional Practice 3, Professional Practice 4 and the Internship in a Catholic primary school in the Rockhampton Diocese
- pre-service teachers must plan and teach a unit of work based on the Diocesan Religion curriculum during Professional practice 4
- pre-service teachers prepare and present a class liturgy based on the unit of work that has been taught during the final placement
- interns engage in additional experiences that enhance their understanding of the role and responsibilities of teachers in the Catholic Education system during the Internship.
Pre-service teachers and supervising teachers are well-prepared for these experiences through a partnership between the university and Catholic Education Office (Rockhampton Diocese). The Teaching and Learning Religion Consultant from Catholic Education Office tutors into the Catholic Education strand of CQUniversity’s courses and also provides professional development and guidance for staff members who supervise final year pre-service teachers in Diocesan schools.
