In memory of Mr Paul Andersen
A proud education alumnus and friend of CQUniversity, Paul Andersen entrusted the University to fulfil his vision of an income stream that would foster the financial capacity and impact of CQUniversity in the Rockhampton community.
The Fund for Accessing Potential Expertise (FAPEx) was born as a result of Mr Andersen’s generous bequest and has since positively impacted an immeasurable number of lives in the Rockhampton region, through capital works and infrastructure on campus, as well as grants and academic prizes that celebrate and recognise high achieving students.

In memory of Mr Paul Andersen
1934 – 2015
Proud education alumnus and friend of CQUniversity, Paul Andersen bequeathed a significant portion of his estate to the University and entrusted us to fulfil his vision of an income stream that would foster the impact of CQUniversity in the Rockhampton community.
His legacy is now the Fund for Accessing Potential Expertise, known as FAPEx, which supports capital works and infrastructure on campus and positively impacts the lives of others through annual research grants.
The FAPEx Grant was to help with the commercialisation of some of the research that we have been undertaking. We’ve had a continuum of work in the mango industry. So going back in time, we commercialised with Colour Vision Systems, later MAF a system for internal quality assessment of fruit. This goes across the pack line, so the fruit are moving underneath it, and then later, same technology to assess fruit quality, but this time in a hand-held format.
That’s happened in the past, we’ve moved on to other technologies and machine vision. Camera systems have come along way and the FAPEx Grant has helped us find a partner. Freelance Robotics has come onboard to take that into the next stage, into commercial use.
At the end of the day, for a farmer to have the technology, it needs to be polished up a bit. It’s also an ongoing RHD Partnership as it has been with these other areas because there will be new ways of doing it, new technologies.
Obviously, the mango industry is part of Northern Australia and it’s economy. We interact with the local growers here (Rockhampton), but also broadly across the supply chain and we work on farms from Darwin to Childers.
Paul’s generous bequest also includes annual academic prizes for high-achieving students– encouraging them to always do their best, both during their studies and beyond.
