Information Technology at CQUniversity

CQUniversity's suite of Information Technology programs have recently been reviewed and restructured to ensure relevance and that our courses meet industry needs.

A key addition to these programs is the Business Analysis major which covers topics such as business analysis planning, requirements elicitation and management, requirements and enterprise analysis and evaluation of alternative solutions. The addition of this new specialisation combines contemporary information technology concepts with business principles, therefore allowing a second dimension in which to apply information technology concepts and opening up career options in business fields for graduates. The Application Development and Network Security (previously Network Systems) specialisations have also been enhanced to remain consistent with industry expectations.

CQUniversity's Association Degree of Information Technology, Bachelor of Information Technology, Bachelor of Information Technology (Co-op) and Master of Information Technology all incorporate the new Business Analysis specialisations and developed Application Development and Network Security specialisations.

Application Development

The Application Development specialization prepares you for a career in software development. The primary focus is state of the art business application development; you will be exposed to industry best practice in terms of technology (mobile computing, web development, enterprise computing), systems analysis and design, and project management. You will have the opportunity through electives to either broaden their technology base in business application development or to develop expertise in specific areas such as multimedia or games development. In order to prepare you for the workplace, a major (2 course) software development project is undertaken in the final year. This project is team based and requires student teams to produce all of the project management and software engineering artefacts typically required of a small scale commercial software development project.

Network Security

The need to connect and be connected now underpins how we gain knowledge, how we work and increasingly, how we play! The Network Security specialisation focuses on the technologies that are used to create and secure the networks that connect us. Throughout the specialisation, questions such as:

  • How do messages travel over the Internet?
  • What technology is required to deploy reliable networks?
  • How do you keep information private and secure?
  • How are networks attacked how can you defend them?

are addressed. If you undertake this specialisation you may pursue skilled and high-demand careers in Network Engineering, Network / Security / Systems Administration/Computer Forensics / Law Enforcement, Security / Technical / Infrastructure Management, Technical Business Analysis or Technical Project Management.
