Music Theatre

Designed predominantly for students wishing to pursue a professional career in music theatre, the music theatre specialisation focuses on expert tuition in voice, acting and dance (ballet, tap and jazz). The specialisation includes individual tuition in voice; classes in acting with particular reference to music theatre styles; classes in dance: ballet, tap and jazz; master-classes and workshops in voice, acting and dance; opportunities for performance in fully-staged musicals directed by industry professionals; development of professional audition technique; technical theatre studies including stage management, lighting and sound design, scenic stage design and directing; academic studies in the history of western theatre and dramatic literature; history of western art music and popular music of the 20th century; introduction to music theory and the development of aural musicianship skills.

Significant performance opportunities exist as part of the program including two fully staged musical theatre productions each year and performances as part of community outreach initiatives within the Central Queensland region. International exchange opportunities are also available in the USA and Europe. We continue to investigate and build partnerships with theatre training providers and theatre companies throughout the world and especially throughout the Asia-Pacific rim.

Career Opportunities

The Bachelor of Theatre (Specialisation) is designed for students seeking a profession in the entertainment industry as an actor, musical theatre performer or as part of the theatre production team. The program includes opportunities to gain the professional skills necessary for a performing arts industry career as a performer, director, designer, theatre technician or theatre manager. The degree also provides excellent pathways for careers in education, creative industries and arts administration.

Work Intergrated Learning

Music theatre has a strong practical focus and offers intensive technical training in singing, dancing and acting to develop a professionally acknowledged ‘triple threat’ performer.

Program Structure

You must complete 24 courses/144 units of credit including:

  • 6 compulsory Performance and Production courses
  • 6 compulsory Music and Theatre courses
  • 6 compulsory courses in Principal Performance
  • 6 Electives
