Program Description

The Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety is designed to develop your expertise in the identification of occupational health and safety hazards in the workplace.

Your studies will equip you with knowledge, skills and initiatives in the areas of occupational hygiene, workplace rehabilitation, ergonomics, safety and occupational health and safety management.  

In addition you will have the option to select from a wide variety of electives to suit your personal needs and interests.

Your training will include decision making, problem solving and management- skills that are highly desired by employers.

The program provides you with a variety of hands-on experiences, including participation in worksite visits and 120 hours of work placement, ensuring you graduate work ready. 

Upon completion you will be prepared to facilitate, educate and promote health and safety in the workplace.

Study the Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety full-time or part-time and either on-campus or by distance education. You may choose to study by distance education so you can gain practical experience and earn while you learn.

CQUniversity is an established provider of distance education and is able to offer a number programs and courses in this mode that have not traditionally been available, such as nursing, medical science, exercise and sport sciences, accident forensics, paramedic science and more.

Our programs and courses are constantly being reviewed and updated in consultation with industry, accrediting bodies and other stakeholders to ensure they are relevant and up-to-date. In fact, our offerings are a response to industry demand for people with specialised industry expertise.

Work integrated learning
CQUniversity's health programs and courses feature work integrated learning, or learning on the job. For some programs this may be referred to as clinical placement.

You may be required to complete course undertakings in real-life workplaces, allowing you to put learning directly into practice. This hands-on, project-based learning is one reason CQUniversity graduates are in such high demand by employers.

Purpose-built facilities
Quality facilities ensure learning is delivered in context, taught in a similar setting to real-world situations including exceptional simulation environments. New facilities including state-of-the-art technology for fitness and body function testing offer exercise and sport sciences students sophisticated training. Nursing students have access to fully equipped labs replicating a real hospital ward, while medical imaging and medical sonography are taught from new purpose-built multi-million dollar labs. The new CQUniversity Health Clinic at CQUniversity Rockhampton also provides clinical learning experiences to students.

If you have English as your second language (international or domestic students born outside of Australia, Canada, NZ, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA), you need to meet different English language proficiency requirements depending on the level of study and/or program you wish to undertake. Click here for more details.

Work Integrated Learning

You are required to complete 120 hours of work placement during your studies.

Program Structure

You are required to complete a total of 24 courses, comprising of 21 core courses and three elective courses from your chosen stream:

  • Human Factors
  • Liberal Studies
  • Population Health
  • Safety Science.

Residential School and Study Requirements

If you study on-campus you are required to attend compulsory residential schools for three courses. If you study by distance education you are required to attend compulsory residential schools for five courses.
