Bachelor of Medical Imaging

A Bachelor of Medical Imaging from CQUniversity provides you with skills and knowledge needed to work as an accredited radiographer. Diagnostic radiographers are responsible for providing safe and accurate imaging examinations in a wide range of clinical environments using a variety of imaging modalities and techniques so that appropriate management and treatment of patients and clients can proceed.

You will be trained in a new state-of-the-art, purpose-built environment based in Mackay, Queensland, using the latest technology, developing key competencies in a digital technology platform, remote and rural innovation, community engagement, internationalisation and lifelong learning. One of the advantages of our program is the 58 weeks of work placements which incorporate reflective learning at each progressive stage of clinical experience so the learned skills and knowledge can be applied in a real-world setting. Graduates from CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Medical Imaging will be recognised as practitioners of the highest calibre.

Unlike other medical imaging programs where students are required to attain a year of practical experience after completion of a three-year bachelor, we offer a four-year program that incorporates work placement throughout the degree.  Our program has a distinct focus on the regional and rural community with clinical placement carried out at suitable health providers throughout Queensland.  There will also be international exchange opportunities if you wish to travel and study.

This is also the only medical imaging program in Australia which offers you the option of studying the first year of the program by distance education, allowing you the flexibility to balance your study, work and life commitments.

What am I studying?

Diagnostic radiographers are responsible for the provision of safe and accurate diagnostic imaging examinations using a variety of imaging techniques in a variety of locations. Radiographers operate x-ray and other imaging equipment to produce radiographs (x-rays) which are then used to diagnose disease or injury. A radiographer works actively with patients in a variety of situations and makes an important contribution to healthcare. A career in radiography provides you with the opportunity to move into specialty areas within medical imaging and medicine.  Medical imaging is a rapidly changing and evolving profession which uses state-of-the-art imaging equipment and the latest technology to have a closer look at the human body. Medical imaging is a globally recognised profession, allowing graduates to take their career anywhere they choose.

Entry Requirements

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If you were not born in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA you are required to meet the English Language Prerequisite by:

An academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) completed within the last 2 years (from the term you are applying to start) with a minimum achievement of 7.0 in each band and overall or a secondary or university qualification which is not more than 5 years old (from the term you are applying for entry into) with a satisfactory level of achievement of at least 2 years in duration from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, South Africa or USA.

The English Language Proficiency requirements may also be satisfied by (results are to be no older than 2 years from the start of term):

- Occupational test: Result of 'A' or 'B'

Career Opportunities

On completion of a Bachelor of Medical Imaging you will be able to practice as a diagnostic radiographer in employment areas such as public and private hospitals, clinics and community health care services.

Work Intergrated Learning

You are required to undertake a minimum of 58 weeks of clinical study in the workplace.

Program Structure

You are required to complete eight core courses in the first year of study, followed by 17 specialist courses in years two to four, as well as the choice of one elective from three in the final year. Please note the program is intensive due to theory and clinical requirements of both the University and professional accreditation bodies. Some of the clinical periods may extend beyond limits of a normal term due to availability of clinical placements.

Professional Recognition

Graduates will be eligible to attain national registration as a medical radiation practitioner (Diagnostic Radiography) with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia and to receive a Statement of Accreditation from the Australian Institute of Radiography (AIR) and to become an Institute Member.
