Master of Safety, Health and Environment

CQUniversity’ s Master of Safety, Health and Environment prepares professionals working in related fields with advanced skills and knowledge in aspects of safety, health and environmental management. The program is designed for current professionals, or for people from related fields looking to expand and extend their knowledge and skill-base in advanced aspects of safety, health and environmental management.

You will develop expertise in the identification and anticipation of health, safety and environment hazards in the workplace, enabling a systematic approach for their identification, assessment and control. The program will also develop your skills and knowledge in the planning, development and implementation of industry-relevant safety, health and environment areas.

The program is offered by distance education and you are supported by online resources and access to help and guidance offered by staff at CQUniversity.  Dependent on courses undertaken, there is an option to exit the program early with a Graduate Diploma of Occupational Healthand Safety or a Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management.

What am I studying?

Safety, health and environment studies develops your expertise in the identification and anticipation of health, safety and environment hazards in the workplace and enables a systematic approach for their identification, assessment and control. The program will develop your skills and knowledge in the important planning, development and implementation of industry relevant safety, health and environment areas.

Environmental Health

Environmental Health is concerned with the promotion of good health, hygiene and environmental practices and is critical to the health and wellbeing of the community. Environmental health officers develop, regulate and enforce laws and regulations governing public health as well as building and environmental management. Environmental health officers may also be responsible for work such as investigating complaints about food safety and ensuring suppliers conform to health regulations, monitoring and reporting on water, air and noise pollution, conduct environmental impact studies and risk assessments, advising and contributing to the policy surrounding environmental health, investigating and advising on public health issues such as disease outbreaks and so much more.

Occupational Health and Safety

Occupational health and safety is concerned with the health and safety of the members within an organisation. Occupational health and safety officers coordinate systems, identify hazards, assess risks and put required controls in place to minimise the risk of accidents and illness among staff. The typical work of an occupational health and safety officer also involves the promotion of health and safety including the development of policies and procedures, inspecting and testing of machinery and equipment, ensuring the correct safety and protective equipment is available and ensuring it meets regulations, ensuring that the organisation complies with legislation, supervising the investigation of accidents, assisting with the organisation of appropriate health care and insurance claims and coordinating emergency procedures.

Entry Requirements

Entry to this program requires a three-year bachelor degree from an Australian university or equivalent in occupational health and safety, environmental science, science, engineering or technology.  Graduates from other disciplines may be eligible provided they have an appropriate technical background. Professional OHS (non-degree) qualifications or equivalent with at least five years work experience at a middle or higher management level may be able to enter the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Health and Saftey and on successful completion be eligible for acceptance into this master program.

Career Opportunities

On completion of the Master of Safety, Health and Environment, you will be qualified to take on a leading role within occupational health and safety and/or environmental areas of industry, government and community services. Areas of employment may include; management and implementation of safety, health and environment policies and procedures, investigations and development, industrial safety management, and environmental risk management.

You are required to complete a total of 11 core courses to complete the Master of Safety, Health & Environment.  Some courses are required for study in Term Three.
