The Master of Rail Safety Management at CQUniversity Australia will enable you to develop a sophisticated set of skills and knowledge in rail safety management that provides the basis for leadership in rail safety management. What am I studying?

Rail safety management is concerned with managing the safety of workers and passengers in the rail industry. Rail safety managers are safety leaders within the organisation and are responsible for promoting safety throughout the workforce, developing and implementing safety initiatives and advocating for change with upper management.

These activities are based on a throrough understanding of organisational risks and hazards, current safety management strategies, the particular culture of groups within the organisation and the relevant safety procedures, regulations and legislation.

Essentially rail safety managers seek to understand safety-related issues and work with different groups of people to improve safety outcomes for workers, passengers and the general public.

The Master of Rail Safety Management at CQUniversity will enable you to develop a sophisticated set of skills and knowledge that provides the basis for leadership in rail safety management. The program is available by distance education and will provide you with a mix of supported online learning experiences as well as face-to-face interactions at residential schools. During the program you will study courses in human factors, occupational hygiene, safety management, risk management, rail regulation and legislation as well as complete an individual research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor.

Entry Requirements

*International students studying onshore in Australia on a student visa will not be able to undertake programs by distance education.

Please be aware there are compulsory residential schools for some courses.

To gain entry into the Master of Rail Safety Management you are required to have either:

- A three year Bachelor degree from an Australian University, or

- If you have completed the Graduate Diploma of Rail Safety Management or equivalent you can apply for 48 units of credit towards the Master of Rail Safety Management. (All other applications for credit transfer will be assessed by the Head of Program on a case-by-case basis)

Consideration may also be given on an individual basis to applicants with professional occupational health and safety (OHS) (non-degree) qualifications or equivalent and who have had at least five years work experience at middle to higher management level; or other relevant qualifications and working towards professional OHS career development.

If applying for entry via this alternative approach you will need to provide and show the ability to:

- Write high level reports;

- Read and analyse academic literature, government policy texts and creat detailed reports; and

- Complete high level numeric tasks applicable to workplace situations.

Note: If applying for entry without a three year bachelor degree from an Australian university you will be assessed by the Head of Program.
