The Diploma of Children's Services (Early childhood education and care)/Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) is designed for those who aim to pursue a career as an early childhood teacher.  Graduates are qualified to teach in kindergarten, preparatory classrooms or primary schools from Year 1 to 7.

The Diploma of Children's Services provides the skills and training necessary to cover workers in children's services who are responsible for planning, implementing and managing programs in early childhood (0-5 years). The program includes key topics including child care, welfare studies and human services. The Diploma of Children's Services is ideal for individual who have responsiblity for supervision of other staff and volunteers and study areas are in accordance with all licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements.

Within the Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education), you will explore personal development through self-understanding and expression, as well as the theoretical foundations of education. Academic development and the practical application of teaching skills are also a focal point in learning management programs.

Why Study at CQIT/CQUniversity

Diploma of Children's Services (Early childhood education and care)/ Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) at CQUniversity focuses on 'classroom-ready' graduates, and allows you to begin completing your professional experience in the first term of study. Graduates of this program can look forward to being experts at 'learning' and the management of learning. You will be taught hot to design and implement learning strategies to achieve educational outcomes for students. You will learn about how to teach reading, numeracy, science and literacy, the importance of play and managing e-learning in the classroom. There are a diverse range of career opportunities, however graduates will be specialised in early childhood and the learning management of younger students.

You may choose to study a degree suitable for the public school system or the Catholic school* strand. The Catholic strand provides you with knowledge required to teach in Catholic schools or other Christian educational settings by providing opportunities for students to develop a sound knowledge-base and understanding of the Christian values.

* Students who aim to pursue a career within the Catholic education sector should seek information from the Program Coordinator prior to the commencement of their second year studies. Students must undertake an interview to be accepted in the Catholic system

Entry Requirements

Please note: Students who have completed a TAFE CHC50302 Diploma in Children's Services (Child Care) or equivalent will be eligible to apply for credit into this program of study. Students should seek advice from a program advisor to develop a study plan.

English Requirements

Please note the following English language proficiency requirements from 1 January 2013:

1. An Academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Report Form (TRF) that shows:

  • a score of at least 7.0 for Reading and Writing; and 
  • a score of at least 8.0 for Speaking and Listening.

The IELTS test scores must appear on a single IELTS TRF and be the result of a test undertaken during the 12 month period prior to submitting an application.

2. An applicant has completed study assessed by Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) as comparable to at least four years of full-time (or part-time equivalent) higher education (university) study, that results in a qualification/s comparable to the education level of an Australian bachelor degree or higher, (must include a recognised initial teacher education qualification) undertaken in Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America.

All applications received by AITSL post-marked from 1 January 2013 will be assessed against the new English language proficiency requirements.

The English language proficiency changes only apply to AITSL and do not impact on other assessment authorities. The AITSL educational and professional criteria remain unchanged.

Career Opportunities

The Diploma of Children's Services (Early childhood education and care)/ Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) is a pre-service preparation for those who aim to pursue a career as an early childhood teacher/educator. Graduates are qualified to teach in kindergarten, preparatory classrooms or primary schools from Year 1 to 7. The qualification also enables you to work as a Director or teacher in childcare centres within the state of Queensland. Those who aim to pursue a career within the Catholic Education sector should seek information from the Program Coordinator prior to the commencement of their second year studies.

Work Intergrated Learning

Throughout your degree you will complete 100 days of professional practice within a school or learning site, plus an internship with authorisation to teach as an intern.

Program Structure

The Diploma of Children's Services (Early childhood education and care) consists of Eighteen (18) units: Thirteen (13) core units; and Five (5) elective units.

To be eligible to graduate from the  Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) you are required to complete 32 courses (subjects). This program is completed over a minimum of four years. There are two strand options for students including the public school strand and the Catholic education strand. The Catholic education strand is available by interview only. The Catholic strand is not available at CQUniversity Noosa, and is not available to mid-year entry students.

There is an option to accelerate the program, but this option is only available to students who have demonstrated, and continue to demonstrate, high achievement in their studies.  You are required to seek permission from the Program Coordinator before commencing the 'fast-track' program structure.

Completing a dual offer program application is easy. Dual offers allow you to apply for a CQIT Diploma and a university qualification at the same time (one QTAC application only). Upon successful completion of your TAFE studies you will be able to progress seamlessly into CQUniversity’s Bachelor Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) (with full credit for successful study).

Professional Recognition

 Graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers. Full registration is gained following two years of successful full-time teaching.  The Bachelor of Learning Management (Early Childhood Education) is an approved child care qualification with the Queensland Government: Office for Early Childhood Education and Care.
