Master of Business

The Master of Business Degree by Research is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis which makes a contribution to knowledge. The program is governed by the Program Rules for Masters Degrees by Research, which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the university will assist you to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

What am I studying?

The holder of a research higher degree will have submitted a thesis which examiners have declared to have provided a contribution to knowledge and demonstrated the candidate's capacity to carry out independent research. 

Research is an integral part of CQUniversity's purpose.  There is a strong commitment to the conduct of cutting-edge research in new areas which challenge the boundaries of the traditional disciplines to provide distinctive research opportunities and solutions for staff, candidates and sponsors.

The Associate Dean (Research and Innovation) is responsible for the management of the Faculty's research portfolio by planning and monitoring the Faculty's directions and activities in research and postgraduate research training.

Entry Requirements

You may be considered for admission to candidature for the masters degree if you:

  • hold an honours degree from the university or any other approved institution in a relevant discipline; or
  • hold a three-year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline; or
  • hold a three-year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one year’s relevant work experience; or
  • hold a three-year undergraduate degree with a credit level grade point average (GPA); or
  • hold a four-year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance; or
  • hold an alternative qualification deemed by the panel to be of equivalent scope and standard.

A higher degree by research is usually required for an academic career or a professional career in researchMany other discipline-specific employment opportunities exist as employers recognise the skills developed through a degree by research program are widely applicable in the workplace.

Program Structure

To complete the program, a candidate will normally study for an expected period of two years (full-time) or four years (part-time).  New applicants may apply at any time of the year and continuing candidates will be re-enrolled at the beginning of each academic year.  The research courses in which masters candidates enrol are ungraded.  Candidates who may be required to complete prescribed courses will be enrolled in a separate program (CP20).
