The Australian building industry has undergone significant growth due to factors such as a rising population and booming economy and is currently ranked as the 11th largest industry in Australia. Building and construction is a vital industry responsible not only for the homes in which we live but for the commercial and industrial buildings in which we work and play. The building and construction industry focuses on two key areas - the residential sector focusing on the construction, renovation and addition to residential dwellings, and the commercial/industrial sector that focuses on the construction of shops, offices, hotels, hospitals, schools and other industry infrastructure.
The building and construction industry also covers a variety of activities, including site preparation, building design and structural services and the construction trades. A key consideration in the modern construction industry is a commitment to achieving environmentally sustainable development within Australia.
Construction managers manage and control complex construction projects to meet their client’s budget and timeframes. They may perform tasks such as planning and estimating the cost and labour for the project, planning construction methods and procedures, coordinating human resources required for the project, supervising the worksite to ensure the project is meeting performance and quality standards, contributing to the preparation of contacts and negotiations, consulting with architects, engineers and technical workers to ensure that design specifications are met, and making sure building regulations, standards and other laws are enforced during construction.
