Scholarship Donor - R.F. (Ron) and H.M. (Helen) Diamond

The Scholarship has been established by R.F. (Ron) and H.M. (Helen) Diamond to mark the exceptional academic achievements of their brother and brother-in-law, the late Jim Diamond, and to assist students about to begin a science program at CQUniversity.

Jim Diamond was born in Rockhampton into a family that experienced economic hardship along with so many other in the Great Depression of 1929-32. His widowed mother reared him and his three brother with Government assistance as wards of the State.

His schooling was at Halls Infants', Boys' Central, and Rockhampton High from which he won a scholarship to The University of Queensland in 1933, one of eighteen awarded annually and financed by the State Government. He was the first "State ward" to win one of these scholarships. He graduated as Bachelor of Science in 1936 and obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy (mathematics and physics) from California Institute of Technology in 1951.

Subsequently working in the United States of America until his retirement in 1982 when he returned to Australia. Dr Diamond contributed to the development of mathematical thinking in writing and lecturing, especially in the field of applied mathematics.
