BMA Indigenous Scholarship Program

The BHP Billiton Mitsubish Alliance (BMA) Scholarship program is a five year partnership between CQUniversity Australia and BMA to support enrolments in higher education by students who reside in BMA's communities of interest studying non-mining disciplines. The aim of the program is to alleviate skills shortages and build capacity in key service areas of BMA's communities. The scholarships are open to students who are applying to study full-time, in their first year of study in Term 1, 2013, on-campus or by distance education. Applications are invited from mature students as well as school leavers.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to receive the BMA Indigenous Scholarship applicants must:

  • Be enrolled at one of CQUniversity's Central Queensland campuses at HECS census date
  • Be enrolled in an Academic program that will contribute towards alleviating the skills shortages in the specified region (non-mining related), in Term 1 2013
  • Provide evidence that they belong to one of the recognised Indigenous Traditional Owner groups in BMA's footprint and/or
  • Provide evidence that they or their parents reside permanently in one of the following specified postcode areas: 4717, 4720, 4723, 4744, 4745.

Indigenous applicants regardless of residential address may also be considered if they can demonstrate a desire to complete a Bachelor program at CQUniversity and to contribute to the Bowen Basin region.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should complete an application form, and provide a 500 word statement demonstrating;

  • How your intended area of study will address the needs of the Central Highlands and/or Isaac regional areas upon completion of the program.
  • Involvement in the community to date
  • How the scholarship and CQUniversity will assist you to be what you want to be.
  • Applicants should include two referees, one personal and one professional (employer or high school) plus any supporting documentation.

Payment of the Scholarship

The scholarship is made in two installments $2500 in Term 1 and $2500 in Term 2. Payment of the scholarship will be made via electronic funds transfer as soon as possible after final enrolment checks at Term 1 and Term 2 Census dates.

How do I apply?

To apply for the BMA Indigenous Scholarship Program:

  1. Read the Scholarship Guidelines
  2. Complete a Scholarship Application Form
  3. Ensure all  supporting documentation is completed and attached as outlined in the Scholarship Guidelines
  4. Submit your Scholarship Application to the Student Support Centre by the closing date – refer to the Scholarship Application Form for submission options

Please Note: Complete Applications must be received at the Student Support Centre, Scholarships Office by the closing date.

How will I know the outcome of my application?

A selection panel, consisting of representatives from BHP Billiton and CQUniversity will meet to determine the successful applicant. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications as soon as possible after the selection panel sits.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) to encourage enrolments in Higher Education by students who reside in BMA’s communities of interest; Moranbah, Emerald/Capella, Dysart and Blackwater.

The BMA Scholarship Program provides funding to students in the regional areas in which BMA operates, to encourage enrolment at CQUniversity’s Central Queensland campuses in areas of study that can influence skills shortages in the region and are unrelated to mining disciplines. Key areas of interest are medical and nursing careers, allied health, business and education. 

The program incorporates community and Indigenous scholarships.
