BMA Community Scholarship Program

The Community Scholarship program offers TEN new scholarships each year valued at $5000 per year for the duration of the academic program (up to four years). The program’s aim is to increase enrolments from people who identify themselves as; female, having a disability, low socio economic status, rural and remote and other minority groups that are not well represented in tertiary education, to help promote knowledge, education links and develop the skills of local people so they can contribute to development in their home communities.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to receive the BMA Community Scholarship applicants must:

  • Be enrolled at one of CQUniversity's Central Queensland Campuses by Census date
  • Be enrolled in an academic program that will contribute towards alleviating the skills shortages in the specified region (non-mining related) in Term 1 2013.
  • Provide evidence that they or their parents reside permanently in one of the following specified postcode areas: 4717, 4720, 4723, 4744, 4745.
  • Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Applications are encouraged from students who identify as having a disability, be disadvantaged or from a low socio economic background, or who are rural and remote.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should complete an application form, and provide a 500 word statement demonstrating;

  • How your intended area fo study will address the needs of Central Highlands and/or Isaac regional areas upon completion of the program.
  • Involvement in the community to date
  • How the scholarship and CQUniversity will assist you to be what you want to be.

Applicants should include two referees, one personal and one professional (employer or high school), plus any supporting documentation.

Payment of the Scholarship

The scholarship is made in two installments $2500 in Term 1 and $2500 in Term 2. Payment of the scholarship will be made via electronic funds transfer as soon as possible after final enrolment checks at Term 1 and Term 2 Census dates.

How do I apply?

To apply for the BMA Community Scholarship Program:

  1. Read the Scholarship Guidelines
  2. Complete a Scholarship Application Form
  3. Ensure all  supporting documentation is completed and attached as outlined in the Scholarship Guidelines
  4. Submit your Scholarship Application to the Student Support Centre by the closing date – refer to the Scholarship Application Form for submission options

Please Note: Complete Applications must be received at the Student Support Centre, Scholarships Office by the closing date.

How will I know the outcome of my application?

A selection panel, consisting of representatives from BHP Billiton and CQUniversity will meet to determine the successful applicant. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their applications as soon as possible after the selection panel sits.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) to encourage enrolments in Higher Education by students who reside in BMA’s communities of interest; Moranbah, Emerald/Capella, Dysart and Blackwater.

The BMA Scholarship Program provides funding to students in the regional areas in which BMA operates, to encourage enrolment at CQUniversity’s Central Queensland campuses in areas of study that can influence skills shortages in the region and are unrelated to mining disciplines. Key areas of interest are medical and nursing careers, allied health, business and education. 

The program incorporates community and Indigenous scholarships.
