Professor Assistant Dean Simulation
Registered Nurse, Midwife, BHlth Sc (UCQ), MClin Ed, (UNSW), PhD, MRCNA,FCN.
Kerry Reid-Searl has been involved in the CQUniversity undergraduate nursing program for the past 21 years. Together with her passion for nursing and nursing education, Kerry also has a strong interest in simulation techniques.
Her current work is focused on strategies for 'the teacher in role' and through this she uses innovative props to create interesting and realistic learning spaces. In particular, she works with silicone props and has designed a unique approach to enable students to experience humanistic simulation experiences before being exposed to practical placements.
Kerry termed the technique Mask-Ed (KRS Simulation). Mask-Ed stands for masking the educator, whilst KRS represents knowledgeable, realistic and spontaneous simulation. The technique is now gaining National and International reputation as reflected in her extensive invitations to present her work in Australia, NewZealand, the USA and the UK. Kerry has also extended her work with puppets and has called the technique Pup-Ed (KRS Simulation).
Kerry, most enjoys working with beginning undergraduate nursing students as well higher degree students. She has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards. The extent of these include two Faculty Teaching Awards, two Vice Chancellor's Teaching Awards, two Australian Learning and Teaching Citations for her outstanding contribution to student learning, Pearson/Australian Nurse Teacher of the Year Award and in 2012 Kerry was awarded an Australian University Teaching Excellence Award. Kerry is the author and co-author of numerous nursing text books which are utilzed by nursing students across Australian and New-Zealand. She has also be included in the Who's Who of Australian Women for the past four years.
Kerry loves working at CQUniversity and believes it is a great University filled with both supportive colleagues and friends. Importantly CQUniversity has been a place that allowed Kerry to be creative and innovative, in her approach to nursing education.
Kerry's work is based in Rockhampton and she lives on the Capricorn coast with her family. In her spare time she enjoys sea kayaking, camping, music and taking every opportunity to find new adventures in life.

Professor Kerry Reid-Searl grew up in Tasmania and undertook her initial nursing preparation at St Johns hospital in Tasmania. Having completed her general certificate she then moved to Queensland and spent several years working in the Torres Strait Islands including Saibai, Boigu, Kubin, Maubiag, Murray,Yorke and Badu, in the role of a remote area nurse.
Kerry then travelled extensively overseas, seeking out adventures including kayaking throughout the Fijian Islands and walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, before returning to Australia to undertake her midiwifery preparation in Townsville. Upon completion of this, she went on to work in the Aboriginal community of Cherbourg.
Later Kerry relocated to Rockhampton where she began working in the medical ward of Rockhampton Hospital and was casually employed at the Mater Hospital. It was also at this time that Kerry commenced her work at CQUniversity (21 years ago) with the very first cohort of undergraduate nursing students. Since then she has been involved in many facets of the nursing program including curriculum design and delivery, course and program coordination, clinical coordination and international clinical placement supervision.
Most recently Kerry has led the development and creation of simulation teaching techniques termed Mask-Ed (KRS Simulation) which have now gained national and international attention. She has implemented the techniques in numerous universities and health care organizations both in Australia and overseas.
Kerry has developed a strong reputation in the nursing profession and has authored and co-authored several text books and published journal articles. She is also a well-traveled and in-demand key note speaker, having been invited to speak at numerous national and international conferences.
In her years as an educator Kerry has won numerous awards for her learning and teaching approaches including two Vice-Chancellor's Excellence in Teaching awards, two Australian Learning and Teaching citations for her outstanding contribution to student learning and was the inaugural 'Australian Nurse Teacher/ Pearson Nurse Teacher of the Year' in 2009.
Kerry continues to explore every opportunity to bring innovation in to her learning and teaching spaces. She is presently the Sub Dean of Simulation in the School of Nursing and Midwifery and continues to remain up-to-date with clinical practice as a peadiatric nurse at Rockhampton Hopsital - a position that she has held for the past eight years. Kerry also has strong links in the community and is involved in a variety of community engagement activities including human relationship education with primary school children. Kerry has completed a Bachelor's degree, a Master's of Clinical Education and a PhD.
Kerry was promoted to Professor in 2013.
