    Dr. Brian J. Maguire is a professor at the Central Queensland University, School of Medical and Applied Sciences in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. He is a 2009 Senior Fulbright Scholar. Professor Maguire holds a doctoral degree in public health from the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and a master's degree in health administration from Central Michigan University. Professor Maguire's past academic positions include: Professor, Charles Sturt University; Clinical Associate Professor, Graduate Program Director and CEEDR Research Director, Department of Emergency Health Services, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC); and, Assistant Professor at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. In the mid-1990s he developed one of the first undergraduate distance education programs in health administration in the United States.


    Professor Maguire has over two dozen publications including articles and book chapters in the areas of epidemiology, policy, management and disaster preparedness. He is one of the leading researchers in the area of occupational risks and safety for emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. 


    Dr. Maguire has been a consultant for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as well as for numerous public health departments, state and local governments. His consulting areas include training, exercises and technology solutions related to bioterrorism, pandemic and disaster preparedness.


    He is the current Chair of the Network of Australasian Paramedic Academics (NAPA). His U.S. federal committee membership experience includes membership on the DHHS/CDC National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Public Safety Council as well as numerous NHTSA committees including: the NEMSAC Safety Sub-committee; Ground Ambulance Safety Committee; EMS workforce injury and illness surveillance system committee; and, the EMS Agenda for the Future Committee.


    Brian worked for two decades in the New York City EMS system as a paramedic, an educator, a supervisor and an administrator. He gained his management experience as an EMS operations supervisor, an agency training director, a city-wide coordinator for paramedic training, a hospital administrator, a board member, the chair of the city-wide ambulance administrators' association, and an EMS agency president. His training experience includes being a NYC paramedic instructor, a NYS certified instructor and the lead instructor in: the first EMT-D course in NYC; the first EMT-I course in NYC; and, the first EMS rescue course in NYC. He was also the coordinator for the first EMS management course for the NYC Emergency Medical Services.


    Brian has run 11 marathons and is a sixth degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, an advanced SCUBA diver and a pilot.
