  • 1992-1995 Consultant: Ecosystem restoration research

My primary research interest relates to questions concerning impacts humans have in the marine environment and ways to mitigate those impacts. My interests extend to all aspects of this process, including identifying risks, determining how impacts occur in space and time, and measuring and mitigating impacts. Specifically, my background and training has been in the fields of marine ecosystem restoration and marine bioinvasions, which are fundamentally linked by processes of community assembly. My expertise has also expanded into risk percpetion and behavioural intent, focussing on introdcued species, vectoring and littering (marine bedris). My approach is to use quantitative ecological tools and methods to answer both fundamental and applied questions. One key output of my research has been the development of more efficient tools directed towards management and policy.

Research Interests

My research interests are broad, spanning both the biological and social sciences and endeavouring to translate science into policy and vice versa. Consequently, within my laboratory I have research projects relating to a variety of areas:

Introduced marine species ecology

  • impacts on endemic species,

  • dispersal via rafting, and

  • restoration dynamics;

Introduced marine species management (biosecurity)

  • vectors and pathways of introduced species,

  • survey and monitoring design,

  • risk analysis and management,
    risk perception and behavioural intent of vectoring, and

  • food security versus biosecurity;

Environmental management

  • risk analysis, risk perception and behavioural intent,

  • marine debris and social implications,

  • ecosystem restoration,

  • effects of fishing on the environment, and

  • ecological valuation;

Seagrass dynamics

  • ecology and biology,

  • restoration and trajectories, and

  • landscape patterns

Marine and coastal conservation

  • environmental generational amnesia,

  • efficacy of restoration,

  • cultural and social values,

  • economic valuation (in collaboration),

  • top down/bottom up conservation strategies, and

  • marine debris
