In December 2011 I retired as the Director of Work Health & Safety Policy after having spent over 20 years in various management and safety roles with the Queensland Government. During that time, I was involved in every major strategic and operational government safety initiative, including the national development of harmonised Australian work health and safety laws and their implementation in Queensland.
In addition, I have operate a safety consultancy business, specialising in the events industry with a particular emphasis on crowd safety at mass gatherings. Clients have included Big Day Out, Soundwave, Livid, Parklife, Valley Fiesta and Queensland Schoolies Week. I am currently completing doctoral work involving the development of a risk assessment methodology which incorporates psychosocial and behavioural factors with the "hard" laws of dynamics.
I have also been a lecturer, tutor, course developer, educational administrator and project supervisor, a role which now principally occupies my time and efforts.
Through both my government service and consultancy work, I have undertaken comprehensive risk assessments and gap analyses, compliance, systems and due diligence audits and evaluation, contingency planning and management, safety management systems development, implementation and evaluation and formulated strategic and operational safety plans for a number of clients. In addition to developing and implementing policies, procedures and systems to achieve compliance, many of these assignments have involved initiating and sustaining a cultural shift in order to achieve compliance and sustainable ‘best practice’ in risk mitigation, injury prevention, rehabilitation and return to work.
